Alright I'm going for a 'general' view here from what I have experienced and I apologise for yes this is going to sound like I'm stereotyping...but why can't women reverse?

  • Sister reverses into car port, after several attempts and lots of screaming she finally manages to park, if there is a car parked next door or across the road she loses it completely and you're looking at 10 attempts plus.
I would have an ounce of sympathy but after six months you'd expect it to be a doddle.

  • Mother is a speed demon, driving for 30 years plus and to blame for my passion/addiction to cars (she owned a garage, had a vast array of sports cars and even drove in Silverstone ladies club) but still she cannot reverse. If parking involves her reversing she will go elsewhere to find a spot.
I have attempted to teach her to reverse parallel park and she can't seem to get it into her mind of when to turn the wheel.

  • Other half she perhaps scares me the most, when reversing she has two speeds, not moving and rocketship fast. So far she has only just missed hitting my car and struck both the mothers and neighbours cars.
She bay parks at horrendous speeds but finds this easiest.

I and other males whom I know seem to have no issue bay parking or reversing, are women lacking something in their makeup which gives them the ability to reverse proficiently? Or are we males superior?

What else is there which proves both species are from different planets, what can males do better? What are females better at?

Please discuss. wink

I can both reverse and can parallel park.

The area I live in is pretty horrific for parking so from the minute I passed my test I've had to do both. The alternative is parking a good ten/fifteen minute walk away.

In my opinion it's about practice. Many people are intimidated by it, give up and go elsewhere rather than continuing to try and actually learn how to do it.

It's not sex specific. IMO of course.

I've often wondered this given that, as a young boy, you spend your life being warned by women in a position of authority that they have eyes in the back of their head!

Well I can reverse just fine....any bumps I've had were when I was going forward paperbag

I blame being smitten at the time, as 3 bumps in as many weeks, is just not normal behaviour hehe

Apparently women "in general" have slightly poorer spatial awareness than men.

This includes things like perception of distance and size, as in "how big is my car and how big is that parking space"

Its supposed to be a genetic throwback from our hunter-gatherer caveman ancestors, the men would go hunting and the women wouldnt.

Same reason men are generally stronger than women.

This of course IS NOT all women, and it is important to remember that women ARE safer drivers than men. Thats a stone cold fact, all down to hormones.

I should also add that I base all this on stuff I have read "on the Internet" so its probably all bull-st.

hehe

I always reverse the StreetKa into parking bays, its a nightmare to see out of the back if you drive straight in and have to reverse out.

That's only because if we told you it really was 12 inches you'd scream and run away saying it was too big and would hurt you.

i blame the fact that mirriors ared use in this. As we all know women use mirrors to check there make-up and therefore, find using them to park confusing

I dont think that the vast majority of women cant reverse, or parellel park, they can, just not when there is anything else within 500 miles of the space they want to use! whistle

For a (marginally) more serious answer try reading some of the works of Prof Robert Winston, the moustachioed evolution expert and sometime BBC presenter.
Deep inside our brains, we are still apes wandering the Savannah.
Men are the hunters.
They decide what they're going to hunt, where to find it and how to kill it. Discussing the plan afterwards will make too much noise, startle the prey and see dinner running off in to the sunset.
So, off they go, with a clear idea of the task in hand. Stalk prey, assess how best to intercept it given it's speed/direction etc, then trap it and kill it. Next priority is to decide which way's home, drag said prey back there, dump it in front of the womenfolk and say "There, dinner, over to you".
Because of this men are naturally good at assessing speed, direction of travel, overall spacial awareness, etc, and have a very good sense of knowing where they are and which way is home. It also makes them very single-minded: "My one job today is to kill a mammoth. Nothing else matters". However, men are pretty poor at admitting defeat since this sends out the signal that they are weak, and no one wants a weak mate. Men also hate asking directions as this equates to telling the tribe from the next valley where the best hunting ground is.
Now, women on the other hand are carers. They look after the fire, preparing mammoth steaks and sabre tooth tiger sausages and the like, and looking after young. Being able to recognise your own off-spring in amongst a gaggle of littl'uns means women are good at remembering things and attention to detail, as does being able to chop up the mammoth your man has just dragged home (cook the edible bits, and bin the poisonous bits). Looking after several littl'uns at once also hones that womanly trait of multi-tasking.
So, men....good at speed/distance/spacial awarness, and finding their way, not so good at multi-tasking, attention to detail, shopping.
Women.....good at doing several things at once, attention to detail, not so good at assessing speed or remembering which way is home, double de-clutching etc.

There are exceptions, and modern man (and woman) isn't quite so binary but really, think about it...
Men are desgined to do certain jobs well meaning they're crap at others. Same goes for the girls.
Argue all you like and call me sexist but it's nature, and there's no force more powerful.

How can you "be better" at something we're physically incapable of doing?
It's like saying we have "better" willies.
