My wife has just returned from shopping at Tescos with my 16 y.o. daughter. They picked up some general food stuffs and a bottle of decent wine. When she got to the till the cashier asked my daughter if she had any ID, she said "no, why?" and the cashier responded that my wife cannot buy the alcohol because there is reasonable doubt that she was buying it for someone under age.

Fookin stupid idiots!!! Does this mean my wife can never go shopping with my daughter and get wine? If they looked like chavs and were buying cheap cider with a handful of cash I might understand it but my wife was paying with switch and had photos of her and my daughter in her purse proving their relationship.

So, the manager was called and she backed up the cashier, again asking my daughter for ID - both my wife and daughter said she was 16 but the wine was not for her anyway so WTF does it matter?????

So, now I have no wine to enjoy my evening meal with.

Should have left the lot there and walked out. Why continue giving people trade when upset ?

Surely you're allowed to drink at home at 16 anyway?
It does sound like a bloody stupid policy, what about all the people with kids? Can they no longer buy drink?

Unfortuantely if the cashier believes the wine is for the younger person they are inclined to ask for ID. The management will always back up their staff, even if they're in the wrong.

The cashiers ask because they fear the reprisals, fine and a Police caution. Unfortunately your wife and daughter have just suffered at the hands of a retard...the cashier!

You could understand it if it was a bottle of Blue Wkd, but a bottle of wine? Absolutely nothing wrong or illegal in a 16 year old drinking wine in their own home.

When my son was still a baby, I popped into Anne Summers, and was promptly told that my son, who was fast asleep in his pram, was not allowed past the underwear section.

I was then told 'I could leave him by the till, if I liked' yikes

stupid but if the cashier is caught selling alcohol to anyone underage they get a criminal record, a fine that runs into thousands and gets sacked. Its not the cashiers fault, they will have had this drummed into them constantly by tesco fearing for their licence, all off sales places have to do the same. I should know Ive got a licence an its a pain in the arse, especially with trading standards and the police doing mystery shops (lets ignore the fact its entrapment rolleyes )

Perhaps we should not be allowed to buy petrol if we have our kids in the car, how do they know we aren't going to let the kids drive?!

It must be group policy - I saw exactly the same thing at my local Tesco (back in the days when I used to shop there).

I could maybe understand it more readily if it was only alcohol being purchased, but when a bottle or two is a small part of a bigger (or weekly) shop ?

Sad.. frown

nope, maybe its different in england but its about a £2000 fine up here for the cashier and loads more for the establishment and possible loss of licence.

In England & Wales the staff usually get an £80 fixed penalty if they are caught serving under age kids.

It's daft isn't it!

What if you were a single parent and had to take your children with you when shopping, it would mean you could never buy alcohol again.

I'd have done what others suggested and just left all the shopping lying on the till and walked.
