Being a first time dog owner, I'm throwing this one open to all you experienced ones out there.

This is Reg...

...and he'll shag anything and everything. I've even had to crop the picture because he had his cock out in it.

He's been humping since we took him to puppy classes at 8 weeks old. I was quite proud at first (Thassss ma boy!!) but now he's just hit 6 months old, and is getting worse. At his training classes, all he does is try to hump all the other dogs in the group. Most of them have gone up a grade, but he's kept back because he'll only ever graduate in shagging.

We're off on holiday in a few weeks, so a colleague offered to look after him. We had a dry run last week, to make sure he'd settle, but he constantly tried to mount his GSD, to the extent where the other dog was getting fed up, and was just about ready to put him in his place. So he came home again.

He's perfectly well behaved other than this. Has a couple of good walks (waLks) a day, and is a pleasure to be around. Reckon it's time to have his bks off? Will it make a difference? I've got him booked in at the vets next week to see if he's man enough for it, but six months may be too young.

I don't want his personality to change too much, but living with a canine Russell Brand is doing my head in. What advice have you all got?

He is not too young to be neutered. No it shouldn't change his personality. This is a common misconception. Occ they can become a bit lazy but only if you let them. Unfortunately because he has been doing it for a long time the op may not stop him completely but should reduce the frequency. It'll also take several weeks to work anyway due to settling down of hormones.

Important note, watch his weight once he's neutered, they can gain weight but if you are careful with his food intake this should not happen.

To be honest I don't think you have any other option, it could become more of an issue esp once he is out of puppyhood.

Yes, neutre time. Or perhaps even castration.

Neuter covers for both male and female, castration specific term for males and spaying being the female specific, or to be precise ovariohysterectomy.

might be a dominance thing as mounting is part of the hierarchy setting behaviour in packs. You should have let the GSD put him in his place. He might have lost a bit of fur but would have got a valuable lesson. In wolf packs it's pretty much only the alpha pair that breed (ISTR but someone do correct me if I'm wrong)so the rest are put in their place if they try to hump?. Might be worth a bit of aversion training to establish your dominance?

What does the trainer say about it at the classes?

A few clues here:

First time dog owners rarely appreciate "start as you mean to go on".

It was cute when he was 8 weeks old, but if you're not happy with him doing it for the next 15 years, you can't encourage him.

...

puppy classes at 8 weeks old

Ah puppy classes. Good for letting him socialise if he enjoys them. They are certainly not for all dogs, despite that disapproving look the "trainers" are so good at, that makes you think you must have a defective puppy rolleyes

...

the other dog was getting fed up, and was just about ready to put him in his place. So he came home again.

You make it sound like a bad thing. Let the older dog teach yours a lesson and put him in his place. Someone has to!
Saying all that, if you're not planning on breeding then yes get him neutered.

Becks has put it very well. I think she is a vet nurse? Apart from his behaviour, it's all part of responsible dog ownership. At least 8,000 healthy dogs are put to sleep every year because no homes can be found for them. Please don't add to the problem smile

Isn't he borderline in age though? My vet refused to do our lab that early due to the fact that he was still growing. He mentioned something about larger breeds needing to be done later to stop growth related joint problems.
