Colds and coughs.

How Long do colds last for, medically? and how long should the associated cough last for, maximum?
3-4 weeks ago, a cold went round our office; pretty much everyone got it at some point, including myself for a couple of days. For one of the two women in my office, it turned into a chest infection.
I then had a week off work (annual leave).
When i come back this week, they BOTH still have the cough, and one still has the cold, apparently, having not taken all the steroids she was given to sort out the chest infection, the other one blaming damaged kidneys (genuine) for a poor immune system.
They're both claiming you can have the same cold for 3-4 weeks, i think that's bollux and that it's about 7 days max.
