Having a party on Saturday night and need to feed approx 30 people.

How much meat will I need to buy though? I'm thinking that once everyone has got a few beers in them they will all want at least 2 servings...so 500g each? 15 kilo's all up?

There will also be bread, roast veggies, salad, nibbles and deserts.

I also have this slow cooker to cook it in. I'm told by the instructions that it needs to be on 80 degrees C and to allow:

Lamb 25kg 2.5-3 hours
Pork 25kg 4-5 hours
Butts of beef 25kg 5 hours
Turkey 10kg 2 hours
Potatoes 1-2 hours

Now those figures dont look right to me. I know that its supposed to be a day long process to cook great wads of meat in this thing but I dont want to mess it up and have a house full of hungry people and a oven full of raw meat!

Half a kilo of meat per person is alot!! Are there going to be girls there or is it a grizzly man kind of affair?

Too much meat, unless you're inviting a lot of South Africans.

Half a pound per person should be plenty. Quality over quantity.

More info on your slow cooker please!

That doesn't look right to me at all. If you consider that, for example, a Sunday roast will take around 1h 30 mins for say a kilo of meat at 180c

party food needs to be meat and veg with munchies, 500g is a nice steak, but as this is your first time of using the slow cooker, best of luck smile
think when I cook 1.5kg of beef it takes 1.5 hours or so at 200C

Yes there will be gearls there yum ....hence why there is this 'salad' being offered to.

I thought a half pound (226g for the rest of us) seemed small? A steak of that size is only about as big as your hand and a CM thick. I guess we are doing heaps of other stuff with it.

It is a pirate fancy dress though...pirates ate great lumps of meat didnt they?

So maybe 3kg beef, 3kg lamb and 3kg turkey...does anyone like turkey in this day and age?

What he said. Factor in all the other ingredients of the meal.

I think that's wrong; for chicken in a conventional fan oven you need about 45 minutes per kilo, plus 20 minutes at the end. Never used a slow cooker before though....

Ah I just realised where you were!! You have grossly under catered. You shouldnt even consider offering less than 1kg per person.

What are you cooking with this meat? is it in a sauce, stew? Im having a bonfire party Sat and will be cooking a Chilli and a load of baked potatoes, along with the usual party nibbles, can't wait.

Regarding cooking time, obviously the thickness of the meat is a major factor. The heat has to be conducted all the way to the centre, and at 80C there is not much temperature difference to drive the heat through (thermodynamic terminology has left me this morning).

I have a Webber bullet (smoker) and although I've only used it once or twice, ISTR the recommended cooking time is about 10 hours.

There is no way a whole 10kg turkey will cook in 2 hours at 80C.

Nah you dont need sauces and the like in one of these slow cookers. The meat will roast in its own juices and all the moisture gets trapped under the hood so it doesnt dry out.

I think I will do a pot of gravy though so people can make beef n gravy rolls biggrin

You can hire these cookers all over the place in aus. Most of the butchers do them as do all the party hire shops. For $100 the deliver it with a full tank of gas and pick it up again on monday.
Its about 5 feet long and 2.5 feet deep.

Just remember, a quarter pound is 'enough' for many people.

A half pound is more than enough.

So cooking 3/4 to a pound will not only feed people but make a whole load of ready-cooked meals thereafter.

When you're buying a pork loin or beef loin off the bone you don't need nearly as much poundage as you would if you got something on the bone such as ribs.

Turkeys, which BBQ very well, have a lot of bone content, doubling the weight for every pound of meat you want to get from them is a reasonable rule of thumb.

If you have never used a slow cooker I would strongly consider cooking to a very lightl level of 'doneness' in the house oven and finishing off in the slow cooker.
