Shopping my neighbour

Ethical dilemma. Chap who lives near me had cancer recently and has been left blind in one eye. He has been through the trauma, has lost his job and can't find another and is generally on his uppers. Has taken to consoling himself at the bottom of the bottle.

Problem is he's still driving. Blind. And pissed. Regularly. He has scraped his Volvo estate about three or four times in the last month. I've tried gently broaching the subject with him and he has said that he is fine to drive and that he doesn't see why he should have to inform the authorities. I'm seriously concerned that he's going to do himself and some poor unfortunate/s some serious damage. Possibly even me or my girlfriend.

I feel that I have to do something, but I am feeling terrible about it.

If he is a danger to others you have a duty to report it.

What if he hits you one day and cripples you. Not nice thought - but none the less possible,

He may have problems but he's not dead yet, unlike the poor sod he'll inevitably run over.

You could well save his life by doing that so go for it I say.

It could be a turning point for him to make the most of what he has also. He may not see it straight away but its for his and possibly others good.

If his vision has been affected, he MUST inform the DVLA. Did he see a doctor? If so, I suppose they 'might inform the DVLA' on his behalf.

There is an item in the news at the moment regarding a pensioner who was driving in a similar condition and killed a woman. He was charged with death by dangerous but died before the trial. The inquest returned a verdict of unlawful death.

driving with one eye is not a problem. Driving pissed is. See him DUI then phone plod.

Not a nice decision to make but you do have to report him. Any way of doing it through his doctor or social worker dept to take it out of your hands?

Surely a call to BiB or DVLA would suffice and they then they check it out. No need for them to say who it was...although the fact you have entioned it befre to him would indicate he'll have a good idea. Still...has to be done

Not really a dilemma in this case, is it? It isn't as if he's harmlessly doing a bit of weed at home.

Have the moral strength to dob him in.

I don't think there's any question over shopping him or not, you have to do it.

I can understand why you feel bad about doing it, taking away his mobility, but come on. Surely you can offer to pop him to the shops every now and again to rid yourself of any guilty feelings about possibly saving his and a potential victims lives?
