I wasn't born then but it seems like a nice, peaceful, guilt-free world...

Since when did advertising ever reflect reality?

It doesn't but I still like the old stuff better than the new stuff! Plus, no 'green' issues, no EU, no global malarkey, 4* petrol, low taxes, jumpers for goalposts... well you can admire the artwork if nothing else.

Plusses and minuses.

Back in the 1950s there may not have been much in way of "issues" to agonise only - except for the fact that most people couldn't afford most of the goodies on offer.

In the 1950s the problem was poverty.

In this day and age the problem is affluence (although that mmay be changing).

I don't think any one era is better or worse than another. It's just that at different petriods in history people have different sets of difficulties to overcome.

4* petrol
That came after the 50s....there was 2* as well, don't remember 3* or 1* though.

Remember sitting in my dad's car at the filling station, watching the pump attendant filling up that Rolls Royce in front...then taking a whole £5 for his trouble.

Coal fires...

Gas pokers to light them...

Portable gas fires :cough:...

Dinky Toys GP cars...Ferrari, Maserati, Alfa Romeo and the rest

Crap electric trains...

Cheese and jam sandwiches...

Dakotas in the sky...

Running away from them, 'cos they might be bombers...

Shops in town, still bombed out by Mr Hitler...

Monochrome telly...from the BBC, evenings only

Warm summers..

Snow that lasted for months...

Police cars with bells.....

'Eee, lad, them wuz the days...smile

That sounds pretty much like my childhood, and that was the late '60s early '70s.

Ration books and winding trains.

Gas boilers and mangles.

When fish was cheap and sixpence for the pictures.

Never a care in the world. cloud9

Cars in the 50s were designed to operate on pool petrol which was all that was available during and after WW2 - octane rating could be as low as 70RON, 4 Star it wasn't!

It may have seemed to be an age of innocence but it was an age of austerity, of disease, of social inequality. Horrific and evil things happened but the broadcast media wasn't developed so they were largely unreported.

Attitudes changed, values questioned, women who had done men's work for six years wanted parity. By the end of the 50s, society had gone through a great change - teenagers existed for the first time!

Can't beat looking at the past through rose tinted glasses.

Except TVs were only black and white so the view is just another shade of grey.
