I work for a project that involves a consortium of leading IT companies to support a rather large IT project for a rather large client. Recieved the following email that was sent to 'Everyone' in the project a few days ago. Classic rant by someone wanting to save the world. Some of the topics raised though are simply jaw dropping. Cant believe he sent it to everyone.

Names and company details have been obscured to protect the innocent....

Dear All,

For a while now I have turned off my computer and screen at night because I'm freaky like that.

Recently I asked M*** (everyone's favourite security guard) to go around and have a look how many pcs are left on overnight. He couldn't be bothered to count them, but said there were a lot, so I got to thinking that they can't all need to be on 24/7.

So, in light of the government's latest initiative to reduce carbon emissions by 80% by 2050 I hoped we at ******** could make headway by turning off as many of our pcs and screens as possible. I'm not talking about the machines that are running scripts and whatnot overnight - but those of you who leave your pc on because you can't be bothered to turn it off/don't like waiting for it to shut down and start up/don't think it will make a difference/use it as an aide memoir to what you were doing before you left the previous evening/drive a gas-guzzling 4x4 and therefore feel you must show a corresponding lack of care for any environmental issues, please be bothered/patient/it might/use outlook tasks or even hibernate your pc instead of locking it/keep enjoying your cars and contribute in other ways, like this!

Fewer machines on overnight means less work for the aircon too. And who knows? If we save ******** enough money off their electricity bill they might just buy us Andrex or some other toilet paper that doesn't shred the ring.

J***

PS: no apologies for spamming you all… save the planet! woo!

At least he's still got a sense of humour of sorts left - unlike most of his ecowarrior brethren. smile

Turning the PC off would make sense, but after the way he worded that I'd leave everything electrical on just to get on his nerves

I have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about leaving the computers on overnight/over weekend and regularly annoy colleagues by switching them all off at the end of the night smile

+1, makes it seem more like an incentive rather then being preached at.

All our screens go into standby after a few minutes, is your office based in 1990?

Off is better than standby! The base units still keep whirring away on standby.

IF I turn my TFT off...the transformer is still ON. And I notice some of these small Dells have a powerpack at the back.

Unplug is better.
