Now I'm not a complete anti-enviromentalist- I believe in recycling, saving energy, not cutting rainforest down etc etc for reasons other than global warming and I am all for any person or company attemting to be more efficient and less 'dirty'
But what boils my fking piss like I cannot describe are companies that give you less and use the environment as an flimsy excuse to do this.

PLastic bags in fking supermarkets is one of them. I am prepared to accept without proof that plastic bags are a problem and that if possible we sould reuse them etc.
However-I am not prepared to accept that when needs must and I must have plastic bags that the environment is any better off whatsoever that they charge me 10p for them.
Yet they gloat about how well they have done for the environment cutting down on plastic bags and making millions in the process.

HOw many other things do you see that boast about coming in environmentally friendly boxes (i.e. st cheap ones ones) are flown from China via the Antartic?

THere must be no end of piss-boiling examples you lot can come up with.

Oh and incidentally- anyone replies to this with a mark out of ten is neither funny, original or 'not a ' Noone will be impressed and say "ooohhh look how clever and hilarious he is posting that. He must have loads of friends on Pistonheads"

I agree with you on the plastic bags. The environmental savings are very minimal, particularly since most of the bags are reused for other purposes. All it does is increase the hastle of going shopping.

I give it 2/10 - How far were you expecting to get on a rant about plastic bags?

... cool

I was previously blissfully ignorant of this.
FOr some reason I thought you couldn't recycle them. Now I am angrier still

The Co-Op discontinued free carrier bags in a fluffy haze of 'environmentalism'. Actually, make that a handy 'PR bandwagon backed by savings' - they are quite happy to sell you bags instead so you can kill the planet that way, as long as you pay them.

I now go to Morrisons - nice big strong free bags and plenty of them biggrin

And who thought of putitng a wind turbine at the start of the Hoover advert? Can I punch them please?

I'm actually quite pleased about the phasing out of plastic bags, and not before time too. They make an absolute mess. I live a few miles away from landfill and they blow everywhere. The coast is also chock full of them, washing up on beaches and getting stuck on rudders etc. I'm a global warming denier too.

Where do you shop?

Most supermarket's I've used recently have taken to hiding the bags - but there's no charge (or dirty look) if you ask for a couple.

I bought a couple of those embarrassing hippy-ish jute ones they sell on the basis that; they were on offer, they're much tougher than the plastic ones and I have an entire kitchen cupboard rammed with hundreds of plastic ones which I rarely re-use and can't be arsed to recycle.

Probably true, but it's still far better to reuse them.

I used to use them as bin-bags. Thus doubling the efficiency of the bag.

Now I have to buy plastic bags on a roll to use in the kitchen bin. Removing carrier bags has made no difference to my consumption of plastic, only it now costs me more.

I think the supermarkets need to take a long hard look at the amount of plastic they use to wrap everything they sell, particularly vegetables, before they start bleating about their environmental credentials.

Agree with you entirly BSR, Its a right pain in the arse especially when I was in France recently and it took me 3 attempts to ask for a plastic bad to put my shopping in frown

All our plastic bags are stuffed in a cupboard. Very handy for gym stuff.

They can only be reused depending on the contents.

For example; if you bought some haddock from the fishmonger, you might not want to reuse that bag for your croissants.

Who counts the 'could theoretically be reused but not actually used because it had fish bits in' cost?

I bet your eco baggies didn't think of that.
