had random recorded phone calls over the weekend saying this is********** bank can you comfirm bank details etc, needless to say i hung up thinking it was a dodgy call, contacted the bank today to alert them to these calls only to be told that they had been trying to contact me as they had detected fraud going on,some blighter had got hold of card details and sercurity code and had booked tickets for national express, then tried for other goods but card was declined(not that there was no money but by the bank)
question-bank cancelled any more transactions, how/what alerted them that something fishy was going on?????????????

monitoring spending patterns, national express tickets are fair enough, but after that they probably tried to get electrical goods etc which is when proverbial eyebrows are raised.

This has happened twice to me this year, but to be fair to the banks they stopped it immediately, and I got all the money back.

However, quite alarmingly there was ( fraudulent ) home deliveries and payment of a council tax bill. When I asked if they were going to pursue it, they said it wasn't worth it both times ( total outlay of £3k ! )

Anti-fraud systems these days are automated with AI and the like. They can alert you to potential fraud instantly. Pretty cool actually, although a bit impersonal.

This just confirms my suspicions that criminals are stupid. You have someone elses card to pay with and you book a trip on a national express cattle truck with the tramps and smelly students.

FFS crims, at least aspire a little! hehe

surely it has to be dodgy people working on the site which you have put your details into?

Personally I've never purchased anyhting off the internets.

If I ever start to do so I'll get another debit card specifically for the job so if my details are stolen it'd be easier to track how.

My niece works at a Travel Agents, and has been approached twice by people wanting to buy card details. It must be rife.

I've had one of the calls as well, thought it was rubbish so ignored it but eventually I spoke to them and it was right!! Well in excess of 6 grands worth had gone through, but I got cash back within 24 hours and all sorted very easily. I was told it was the monitoring process that had identified the issue which is good. The bad thing is that I know exactly where the card was cloned, they were less interested in that...

It's spooky if you use your card for something that you don't do often, like to have an online flutter on the Grand National, or buy a first-class train ticket to some godawful town somewhere in Britain, and within a couple of minutes the credit card company rings with an automated system to go through last five transactions.

Saying that card fraud is absolutlely rife and the cleverer fraudsters kno whow to play the system - never put too much on one card for a start. The banks, card companies and Visa/MC/Amex seem to not be bothered with fraud below a certain threshold.

Yep National Express came up on my account when it was skimmed as well.

Thing was in my case that I hadn't used the card for a year, then used it in a petrol station in the north of England in an emergency (no fuel/no money) and a day later the account started being used fraudulently. I told the card people this, did they care? Not at all, they more or less told me they weren't even going to investigate much to my annoyance. With employee records/video evidence it should have been a simple job for the police to just do some simple investigations and some arrests.
Obviously being handed the criminals on a plate isn't good enough for the card providers.

The banks are not interested as they just enter a dispute and it is up to the retailer to prove that the card was genuine and correct security checks were made. They have six weeks to do this. If the retailer cannot prove all that they need to, then the banks have lost nothing, so nothing to investigate for them.

Got taken for £6000 last year. A Nigerian [strange] woman in Dublin had bought Congestion charge vouchers, car insurance for two vehicles, Aer Lingus tickets, and stacks of stuff from a home shopping outfit in Manchester. Contacted all of the above who showed absolutely no interest at all...why should they?
All monies were refunded including the lap dancing club she had visited on more than one occasion!!!

I've had cards cloned 4 times so far - the last 2 times (5 years apart) the first transactions were both small amounts paid to national express, so I'm guessing that may be what set the alarm bells in your case.
