Yes stupid but:
The county, which did not admit wrongdoing, will also pay $45,000 in damages. Plaintiff Jameelah Medina will get $10,000 after subtracting attorney fees, said Hector Villagra, director of the Orange County office of the American Civil Liberties Union.
So it's the lawyers who win again ...
Medina, 30, was arrested in December 2005 in Pomona for having an invalid train pass.
That is taking the piss though ... they don't muck around in Pomona ...

There are now signs up in all the Malls here in Dubai asking all persons who visit the mall to "dress appropriately." Seems to have been a few complaints about tourists who wear rather short skirts and small tops when shopping.
I don't have a problem with that, Dubai is their little world, they can set up their own rules there. However don't come to my secular society and expect it to change because you expect special treatment. There are now signs up in all the Malls here in Dubai asking all persons who visit the mall to "dress appropriately." It's their country, and they can enforce what they want based on their cultural/religious values. A lot of westerners who emigrate don't seem to grasp this concept.

At least the state didn't have to pay for the attorney fees. In the UK the tax payer would have footed the bill as well The county, which did not admit wrongdoing, will also pay $45,000 in damages. Why are we up in arms about allowing people a little religious leeway?
What is so terrible about them wearing these things that is causing outrage here?
WHat am I missing that I should be angry about?
This is pistonheads and the woman is clearly religious. When the righteous holocaust of these ill-minded monotheists begins, you'd better choose the right side & scream for their blood like you really mean it, or maybe we wont be able to tell you apart. Huh? Huh? Thought so.What is so terrible about them wearing these things that is causing outrage here?

If you commit a crime in the States or many other places fingerprints and photographs will be taken.
Wearing a full head covering makes this quite difficult
Most shiras only state the head must be covered, some interpret this as the top of the head but in some cultures (mostly arab penninusar)this is taken to be the complete head.
As many (maybe most) American Muslims don't know whether they are Sunni or shiite it is unlikely they know which shira they are under.
Incidently head covering is practised by Christians too, Anglican, most females will wear a hat (during as service). Catholics did too until Vatican 2.

"I felt exposed and vulnerable," she said. "I don't think I could have felt more naked even if I had no clothes on."
That makes no sense in my mind!
The scarf covering the head is seen as an extension of one's clothes. One of my housemates was Muslim and she hated being seen by men without her headscarf, she said it was very embarassing. She only felt comfortable with male family members seeing her without it. That makes no sense in my mind!

I don't know what the Western equivalent is, perhaps being caught going commando?
