Hmmmm just had an interesting conversation of the OH.

She has started her own photography business recently, developed a small website with her details on etc.

She keeps getting calls from supposed angry customers who say she has taken money from there credit cards - she has no means to accept credit card payments!

Basically people are seeing her company name on there credit card statements for goods they have not purchased. Then they are calling the said credit card company to complain who are then giving them the OH's company details from the transaction!!

Ive told her to make notes of everything, and walk into the local police station to report this, also good to get something on record.

Anyone heard of this before or know what we can do to stop this please?

Thanks.

Nope, never heard of it.

Quick suggestion - change name of her company and website.

Probably far quicker and cheaper than trying to get 1) Anything from the Police and 2) Any help from Credit Card companies.

Google your wifes company details. Something very similar should be there. They'll be the culprits.

Thanks - did Try that and found nothing. Also shirley this would not make sense anyway as the persons with the cards are not actually buying anything from the OH or any other fake websites?

Confused! Is this a new type of fraud - she is concerned it could escalate and considering she is trying to establish a business in difficult times could do without scum bags getting in the way.

Not a new type of fraud, just a different spin.

Someone has a point of sale device set up supplying details of your wifes company - or so close that is where the credit card companies are pointing them.

The cards are cloned and used to 'purchase' goods via the point of sale device. Said goods are supplied by a third party and have been paid for as far as they know.

By the time the fake/fraudulent card transactions are investigated the guy in the midddle has disappeared.

Have you tried companies house. See if they hold something fro a similar named company? Any details of the credit cards being used so you can contact their fraud departments.

One strange thing is that it is the 'irate customers' calling. Normally the CC co's do follow ups...........

Ok thanks, bit clearer now.

I thought the same though with the customers contacting her direct. If a card has been cloned you would think the customer complaining would have many false transactions of products not purchased and that the cc company would have been alerted at time of transaction/s. The transactions that appear from her are for amounts no more than £50.

There is another company with a very simular name but on there website they give no contact details - just a contact page with a send button. Im going to advise OH to do this also. . . .

have you verified the stories with the credit card companies?

with it being individuals calling, it could them that are instigating thefraud - i.e. they are trying to pressure your OH into refunding them the money directly, to save her business image etc.

The amounts below £50 makes sense. Less chance of there being an identity check carried out below this threshold.

Go to Companies House website and look at the other company details, see if they are registered etc.

Not uncommon for fraudster to start with small purchases on a card before hitting it for a big one. Testing the water so to speak. I had mine used for two £4 bus tickets. Go figure?

I agree here. The credit card companies would do all the follow up, this sounds far more like other people on the make trying to extract cash from your OH.
