I am off skiing again this year. I have been going regularly once or twice a year and am pretty competent. My brother is a ski instructor and I had my initial training as a two week course in the army. I don't go off piste as I like my legs the shape they, my head circular and snow is something I ride on not sleep under.

I am intruiged about the small skis..about a metre long as I fancy being self contained this year. They would go in my flight bag with the boots I already have and I wouldn't have to mess about with either ski shops or transporting skis.

The question is what are they like to ski on? I can ski forwards and backwards already and they seem desingned for that with two leading edges.
But what are they like say at speed down a red? I have also heard they are knee breakers..
any info?

I think they are the only thing that Skiers and snowboarders can agree on

I don't do the ski vs snowboard issue/debate thing. I ski because I like being able to skate the flat bits rather than shuffle but my son boards , its a generation thing rather than one is better/worse than another.

Yes, had them years ago as a kid. I wasn't the best skier so the shop recommended these. So much easier to turn and walk with the ski's on.

But I was very young and bad! So if you have any experience they are probably not great.

My best man once had a go on a small 'skimo.

Does that count?

He caught the clap.

From what I've seen of other users in our group they flatter your style due to the length, easy to turn etc. the kneebreaker reputation comes from the complete lack of stability in anything fast and smooth. Said person was always the slowest and we had to keep stopping and waiting, their style and ability came on in leaps and bounds once they went back to normal skis.

My perception is that they're great for a bit of fun occasionally but not to learn or improve on.

Blades. On a 14 year old smart alec kid they look great. Afore mentioned yoof will always go past me at 1 million mph on his blades no matter what gradient we're on. Mind you, the five year kids on their full size skis do the same frown

Blades on adults are just wrong.

Simply put, the longer the ski, the faster you'll go. They're probably better in moguls, but for sheer stability and carving on piste, I'd just hire some normal carvers. People that own them seem to spend their time justifying them....

I thought even skiers thought 'blades' were for gays?

They are perfect for doing spins and jumps on, going fast feels like taking an endless line of speed bumps and 50mph. Not the most stable of skis, but allegedly they are fun (not that I'd ever admit to having a go as I'm a boarder)

You will need a stupid jester hat as well to give the appearance that you are from the continent and not a British man having a mid-life crisis.

Ill expand my answer!

I snowboard and ski (cant we all just get along) and have tried the "snow blades". Personally i think they are terrible inventions. I spent a whole day on them once and not once did i feel in control and i would say i'm fairly competent at both snowboard and ski (much better on snowboard)

With them being a lot shorter, when tackling something like a steep red which say has ice on it you will try and stop and just keep on sliding. On anything slightly bumpy they will just toss you around like a bead of sweat in a gym instructors cleavage.

They are much more twitchy due to the length and have no place in any snow deeper than a groomed piste as they will just sink.

I guess that clears up my stance on them!

Thats the answer I feared. It depends though. My group this year aren't great skiiers and last year I spent a lot of time coaching and waiting at the bottom of runs. We will probably never hit the reds if I stay with that group and myself anyway prefer blues. skiing reds isn't a problem its just I have been with some groups and if its not a red or black they get snotty. You end up spending the day fighting the ice and missing the views.

Blades are a complete waste of time - if you can ski competently you should not even be considering these. Get some twin tips and have fun messing around on those, if you are not with a fast group. Alternatively, get some freeride skis, hire a good guide or instructor and learn how to ski deep snow (if you are lucky enough to have any). Off piste or back country on skis is the best feeling in the world, once you have figured it out.

Never ski’d with these ‘blade’ thingies, hell it’s been over 15 years since I last picked up a pair of skis due to non-ski interested g/f’s and friends.

I did try a pair of very short skis once though and found them to be fun for what we were doing (jumping and a very short mougle patch where we were trying to see who could get the closest to breaking their knees (okay pissing around and showing off in the way that young lads do). That said I wouldn’t want to ever try and ski properly with them for all the reasons given by 873.

…then again I hated the mono-ski and the least said about standing in a lift queue and being wiped out by learner boarders the better wink
