Since getting my notice of redundancy, I've applied for well over 20 jobs.

So far, around half of them have all replied with the standard response:

'Many thanks for your application for the above position.Unfortunately, there were other candidates who more closely matched our requirements, so I regret to inform you that we won’t be taking your application any further on this occasion.'

Asking for further details of where I fell short gets me nowhere as my emails are ignored.

How are other job-seekers getting on? - I've been very carefully applying for stuff that I know fits my CV (last one was a 'fresh foods counters coach' for a large supermarket - an industry in which I've worked for most of my career, with responsibility for all the legalities involved with such counters etc., and also in an area management role) - but still getting the standard rejections.

Are there any jobs out there, or are most companies just harvesting CVs for when the economic situation improves?

Don't email them, phone them. Emails are easy to ignore or reply to with a standard letter. They can't do this to phone calls.

Yes, I have phoned some of them - where they provide phone details.

Of the rest, it's usually an agency who don't care and won't tell you who their client is. That's if the person you need to speak to can be bothered picking up their phone.

If you can get past the receptionist.

i have the reply to that email somewhere, the reply says something about the type of work and the position being easier to fill by choosing someone from a similar company/background.

i swear i had that identical email back from a few job's.

Same up in the North West too.

Spent an hour being told that getting the job was dependant on 'how you would fit in with Rob, who retires in 2 weeks'. Mentioned 8 times in the interview (I was annoyed enough to count). Was on the verge of asking why the fk he wasn't in the cocking interview process then.

Idiots. Allied Bakeries. Good luck getting someone with that skillset to do it for 19k! fking stheads. Waste of half a day off.

If there is a rhyme or reason to it, its not for you to know. You have to keep going, and put the best face on it you can on each occasion. Do not take a rejection as necessarily a reflection on you personally. I know a number of people who have been through that and worse, and in the end, they got the right job. You will get there.

I am a recruitment consultant. If they won't tell you who you're being put forward to, tell them to f*ck off or you'll just call their competitors.

I can totally sympathise here! Feel free to join the "we hate employment agencies" club. chances are the job never existed (yes, this is illegal, but you try proving it) and they are just trawling for CVs. If you get to a receptionist, ask to speak to human resources. It is not the receptionist's job to block you and you should refuse to tell them what it is about.

The very worst way of finding vacancies is traditionally cold-calling. However, this actually seems to be the best way now. Even if you just get a "send us your CV" reply, you will at least get a direct contact. Remember that there is only 1 person that can say yes, every other person between you and them has the job of saying no, so the fewer people the better. Talking to a recruiter even for 30 seconds will give them a better impression than any CV, and they will be much more likely to remember you.

Same in Switzerland too. Applied for many jobs here in the last couple of months and have only heard back from one that was based in Holland. It was for ING and they said fk off in no uncertain terms, which was nice. The rest, I have heard not a jot.

I've seen exactly the same job advert posted for a 12 month contract to cover maternity leave. Its been put up once a month for the last two years!

My experience seems to support the theory that most recruitment agents just don't give a stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I have come across some good 'uns, but the majority are your bezzie mate when they think you might fit a role, but then they won't even give you the courtesy of letting you know you've not been successful in your application, never mind give you an indication why.

It's very frustrating. Hopefully I'm very close to getting a job, but I hate to think how many jobs I've applied for. irked

I don't think its just now. I was job hunting a few years back and must have filled in 50-60 applications and only got 8 real replies and 5 interviews. People will say call them/bug them etc but in my experience they only accept written applications (not even CVs a lot of the time). Its a hard and depressing game, all you can do it try and keep motivated and not let it get you down.

What gets me about some agencies is that they'll phone you, email you and generally hassle you about a role, then you'll not hear anything back about it.

I had one agency hassle me about a role, to the point that they spoke to me, sent me the details on a Friday afternoon and asked me to look over it over the weekend and call them back on the Monday. Which I did.

Not heard anything back since then. Can't even get hold of the bloke on the phone now.

I'm currently in a field sales role for an FMCG supplier to a couple of the UK's big supermarket chains - so have applied for several similar roles, but been rejected for almost all of them!
