Just a thought but did you even register with the provider when you moved into the house?

I went a few years without paying a water bill - they caught up with me in the end.

I'd suggest you put a sum away every month just in case they catch you - they'll claim you've stolen the volts.

Yes - And I think its ME!!! My bills are frickin stupid... I'm sure I've got a leaky socket somewhere.

Just keep you head down!

...actually, I know its a bit of a cheek, but would you mind if I plugged my extension lead into your house for the winter?

Move! Move now. The cost of back payments will probably exceed the equity loss on selling the house, so get out while you can. biggrin

That should take them about 5 minutes.

I'm not sure if the statute of limitations might be useful to you - maybe not as they haven't started proceedings against you.

Very difficult to know what to advise, our electricity bills at home are huge - nearly £1k a quarter and we have gas and oil doing cooking and heating! So assuming a 3 bed house and all electric you could be £2k a year so maybe up to £10k over 5 years. eek

Selling the house won't help as the legal docs will want you to disclose who supplies power.

Check the wiring of your house to make sure the previous people hadn't wired into next doors.

They cannot back bill you more than 12 months, so don't worry.

When they do eventually catch up, they will meter you for one month. Make sure your usage during this time is very low, or even better, go away on holiday! biggrin

They will then x the monthly usage by 12, and that will be your retrospective bill.

Don't worry, the Law states they cannot come after you for more than 12 months usage.

I have been in the same situation in the past.

It is now 2 years IIRC.

HOwever, they can chase for longer if you are proven to have acted fraudulently.

Sweet! Did they work it out in the end?

My water company didn't bill me for our (new-build) house for 18 months. When they realised they 'phoned and asked for the meter reading from when we moved in. I just wandered outside with the 'phone and read it off the meter that day. They never questioned it.
(Not a huge coup, though, as our water is only about £20/quarter)

£1k a QUARTER?????? Do you live in Buckingham palace???? yikes

Good grief, what the hell do you do with the stuff; give it free to third world countries????

Do all your neighbours have power cords stretching across your back garden, and smile when they see you in the street????

We have a three bed semi, four people in, leccy is about £150 a quarter, maximum.

Possibly lots of powerful lighting for the plants?
