Silent Hill the movie help please?

I watched Silent Hill last night and all round was a pretty good watch to kill a couple of hours but a couple of questions.
What I got;
The girl )Sharon) i'm assuming was the daughter of the burned up devil woman thing in the hospital bed who had turned evil due to the horrific way she was treated as a witch as a girl. In turn her mother was the woman with the dreadlocks who stayed outside when it was dark and the baddies came out.
Now the questions;
Was the father the janitor in the toilet block? If so was he the copper with the burn marks on his hands where he tried to save the devil woman from burning the same person?
What was the sketch with Sean Bean and his missus never getting back together? Was that because it was a parallel universe? If so and the answer to the question about the father is yes how could he be in both worlds?
Why was there a parallel universe?
And lastly, the policewoman, feck she was fit?
