Are the UK's streets safe ?
Can you predict the next serious assault in your area ? I can.
It's going to happen in the next few hours or days. I can even predict the area in my town - It's Basingstoke Railway station and taxi rank.
What are the authorities doing about it ?
The answer is nothing. Ambulances and the Police just turn up when they can sometime after the offence is commited, at great cost to the tax payer when all it needs is a visual presence of a couple of coppers or a police car strategically parked - common sense Policing.

Every weekend is the same, weekdays are also no exception - innocent parties minding their own business after, or during, a night out are constantly being assaulted at Basingstoke Railway station by drunken miscreants of all ages, even women are joining in. Something you would normally associate with youths, but the alarming trend is - these miscreants are adults!

This weekend alone I've witnessed three attacks. The first one around 9pm on Friday when four youths were attacked by a much larger gang. Later that night and in the early hours as I drive into the rank two men of around the early 20's have got a another bloke over a wall and are punching him in the head, the victim's girlfriend crying nearby. As I and other cab drivers pull over the attackers run off leaving the victim less two teeth and a nasty gash on his nose.

In the early hours of this morning, again in the same spot, I drive through to witness another attack. This time some short stocky bloke and his mate lashing out at 3 blokes who clearly didn't want trouble, punching and possibly breaking one of the guys noses. One of the guys being attacked tries to defend himself, resulting in both attackers turning on him. Again we, myself and a couple of cab drivers, intervene with the assailants running off.

This is a regular occurrence and only the Saturday before some poor bloke got head butted when walking by a group. Again we intervene to stop the attack from being prolonged.

So again I emphasise What action is being taken by the authorities to stop these spiteful, willful assaults taking place. The answer is nothing, they seem quite happy to allow these assaults to take place, instead preferring to turn up once the horse has bolted. wasting time and money when a suitable deterrent should be used.

I don't think its the place to go anymore, alot more bars have opened in town. I haven't been out drinking in Goole for years, and dont really intend to.

Croydont Town Center any other day besides monday and tuesday . I ahve no idea about the next fatal one as they happen once every 2weeks or so .
The council has spent millions on cctv and they still can't deter fk all

Basingstoke harbours some of the most mindless chav adults and kids I have ever known.

I don't think there is much trouble in Kingston, but I would predict that it will be at the Cambridge Estate.

My impression is, the violent problems in Basingstoke and Goole are no different to the average town in the UK and the problem is wide spread. The problem seems to me to be getting worse with these miscreants, mainly adults, just lashing out at anyone they see fit to bully after a few pints. A problem that is worsening due not only to the attitude of a few but the way the authorites implement Police tactics. It's getting to the stage where I myself am feeling vulnerable, and I'm a relatively capable bloke.

I've been told by a copper before, because of the amount of crime taking place they will attend a crime merited on it's seriousness. This was while he was attending to the criminal damage to my cab 18 months ago, he simply apologised, jumped in his van and made off to the next scene of crime.

I could never do your job, I would be terrified!
It was definately bullying by a gang of the town people, they had a hard life, loads of drugs, violence etc and took an exception to the people from the surrounding villages.

Just after I left for the RAF some of these "girls" cornered my friend on her own and smashed her in the face repeatedly with a brick! Absolutely sickens me to think of it

I live in Luton. Despite its reputation its one of the most peaceful towns for miles around on a Friday and Saturday night.

One of my golden rules is - I never leave the rank with anyone threatening, choosing instead to front it down on my own patch, the rank, rather than some dark estate. What worries me most is seeing decent, innocent people being attacked and it's a disgrace that the authorities are allowing it to happen. Because that's what they are effectively doing as a result of their ineffective police tactics.

I live 200 yards from the spot your describe, the drunk clowns that wander past my house normally late (but sometime not so late) at night just beggar belief.

Utter pricks of the highest order.

I've personally interviened in a mugging/bag snatch (nearly caught him too, got the bag back though), an assault where a girl had had a serious kicking and a stabbing/mugging in the last few years.

Dread to think what it must be like for you having to spend any amount of time there.

I've given up on town in Basingstoke now, dont shop or socialise there.

p.s can I get a PH discount next time i'm in your cab

I know the road you mean, I live up the top off Darlington Road. It's the route through to Oakridge and Popley I call 'chav alley', even during the day it gets good use. I blame the cheap booze on sale in the corner shop

A few things.

The arrival of the university, generally students don't go out looking for trouble.

Staggered pub and club closing times, introduced a long time before the rest of the country, so you can choose where to go, not everyone piles onto the street at 11pm and 2pm so you don't get sudden large queues at the kebab vans and cab ranks. There's enough cabs, so straight out of a club and into a cab, usually just a few steps away.
