now that i can't go on a simple lunchtime butty run without being bombarded by christmas advertising, i was wondering what PHer's favourite christmas songs are and what are the ones you most despise?

for me, phil spector's 'a christmas gift to you' is the only source of decent tunage, the best being darlene love's 'christmas [baby please come home]'. the worst is anything by cliff fking richard.

any others?

The Good:
The Waitresses - Christmas (W)Rapping
Always raises a smile. Canyou see what they did with that title? Genius.

Last Christmas by Wham. Although not technically a Christmas song (the lyrics are very clear that it is about LAST Christmas, it doesn't mention the current festive period at all) it is still the best Christmas video. Ever.

The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24".

The Bad:
Some awful David Essex Christmas single - can't recall the name. Immediate switch off of the radio. Oh, I remember now, "A Winter's Tale".

The Spice Girls cover of the Waitresses track.

Originally they were called Pogue Mahone — pogue mahone being the Anglicisation of the Irish póg mo thóin, meaning "kiss my arse"

The group was originally called "Póg mo Thóin" which is Irish/Gaelic for "Kiss my Ass". The name was later shortened and Angliscised to "The Pogues".

(Beaten to it I see).
