I'm looking at getting a new home cinema set and I've heard great things about this...

The NAD Viso Five

Firstly, anyone have any experience?

Also, any recommendations on a brand of speaker to add to it - I remember seeing that some had written about it on the 'show your set up' thread recently - that xxx speakers seem to go well with NAD gear.

Many thanks,

Plotloss

try posting on one of the high end audio forums such as audiogon. you stand a much better chance of an in depth review.

hth.

Any other recommendations?

I'm out in Dubai and good stuff is a little thin on the ground.

Dunno about out there but in the UK the NAD linked is £700 which puts you into Onkyo 806 territory, which is THX Ultra 2 certified.

I've got an Onkyo (low spec) at the moment which has been pretty good - there's a deal going on with the 606 IIRC. will have a look at that as well.

NAD stuff has a really good reputation.... agree you should be looking at one of the other forums though.

NAD has a good repuation for hi-fi of course. But frankly, I wouldn't bother spending that sort of money on such a system - not worth it at all IMO unless you go down the route of acoustically treating your room properly and sorting your listening position (which 'audiophiles' never seem to do). And whatever you do, do not waste your money on expensive cables, cryogenically frozen connectors, gold plated plugs etc etc.

Ok - went to the shop and had a good listen to a number of units and the one that shone was the Onkyo SR875. Fantastic Sound and the upscaling of all inputs and the single HDMI to the telly (40" Sony Bravia V series - for the time being) means that it will clear up loads of clutter.

Also settled on the following speakers,

Definitive Technology Mythos Ones for the main fronts, Mythos Fives for the rears, Mythos Three for the centre and the SuperCube II sub.

Excellent performance and very stylish (bearing in mind the missus wouldn't go for anything to bulky.

Need to look at a good quality HD-DVD player now.

Going to be looking at a new telly in the new year so should end up with quite a nice all round set up smile

Yes - the Onkyo had a far more balanced and direct sound - the NAD sounded a little limp by comparison. Much nicer design though.

Also, the Onkyo can be haggled over while the NAD was a bit more than you'd pay in the UK.

To be specific - Blu-Ray.

Sorry - HD was just a turn of phrase for me.

Ah, thought so. Wasn't aware anyone still made HD-DVD players.

Biased st reviews that have no basis in reality IMO (and I was a subscriber for years).

Home cinema choice is probably worth a look along with AV-Forums if it's for home cinema duties.

Apologies for a hijack, but is the Onkyo TXSR876 any good (for the price)? I've got a Samsung 50" plasma (PS50P98FD) and am looking for a decent AV amp to go with it.

So, the question might be style over substance?
Sounds, only one decider, your ears.
All else is irrelevant.
