Recommend me a cool hotel in Liverpool?

Planning a bit of a jaunt around North Wales and the North West, the old stamping grounds of my youth, can anyone recommend me a cool, comfortable, central hotel for the missus and me in the 'Pool please? Ta.

the old Speke Airport building is now an Art Deco hotel owned by Marriott, but it is not near anything other than the airport though! :

My folks have a pad in Chester so will use that there, want to have a night out in Liverpool and stay over so need central hotel.
I'm guessing by the that there aren't many.......!?

There are, they are just stuck in either the outskirts, or the city centre. If you are going to be at speke airport, you might as well be on the Wirral, or Chester.
