There is a noticeable tendency to run down our home towns, or parts of them, making out they are the worst place in the world to live. Why do we do this? There are far, far worse places to live than London or a provincial UK town, yet we all make out it's Beirut, the girls are awful madams, the men are all chavs, the council the most useless of all councils, the place is the dirtiest anywhere.

Why do we not love the place we (mostly) choose to live? Why do we attempt to dissuade others from visiting?

I love my area - there are certainly a few rough bits but on the whole it's a privilege to live here and I don't think the grass is greener elsewhere.

Ok, I meant where you live... i.e. your home. Not where you grew up.

I used to be like that, whenever I go home now I appreciate it for what it is, a small town in Scotland with lovely surrounding countryside, just the sort of place you would move to for a nice family life.

However, once I have spent more than a few days I realise what an insular, inward looking, up its own arse hole it really is. It really is the people that make a place and both the 'poor' people and the 'posh people are the bigerst bunch of morons I have ever come across.

I left my hometown for a reason, nothing sinister but there just werent any jobs there that I wanted to do day in day out.

I still go back there to see family every so often, and there's a curse on those that were born there will die there, so I tend to make them short trips.

My home town is Edinburgh, I don't run it down, I think it is a fantastic city and am proud to be from it.

I don't run my hometown down, I'm from Chepstow - currently living in Weston S Mud, as soon as I can afford to I'd be happy to move back to the 'Stow.

Sad.

I'm down the Coast, and quite frankly I'd rather live in Brum. The city not the car.

If you live in Merseyside it's not hard to be depressed.

Why do I run it down. Is it the deralict buildings, the hookers, the drug dealing, the guys walking the street at 08:30 opening a can of larger, the stabbings and other murders, the crap road planning or the football club? (Although Wolves are apparently doing ok now..)

I dont know why I run it down apart from those items....

I live in Rochester which I am sort of proud of. The Medway towns on the whole are a dump though. I've got a great bunch of friends and neighbours and there is an interesting arts and music scene. Couple of great pubs. Excellent transport links to London and the continent.

The derelict police station is a tasty landmark as well as the cluster of disused petrol stations. Hand Car Wash is the name of the game these days.
No shortage of Chavs, I think they were invented nearby. Litter is popular as well as swearing and violence.

So it is a mixture. I enjoy running it down amongst my friends but get a bit defensive if an outsider does it.

It's not the town that's the problem in my case. I live in, (or at least just outside), quite a nice little town.

The problem is the indigenous population that refuses to evolve in any way shape or form. It's very much a 'My Dad did it this way and if it was good enough for him it's good enough for me!' kind of area.

The town (well, village) I grew up in is great, I'd love to live there but I'm about £1m short of buying a decent house in the area.

The place I now live in, I run down because it's a st hole. Traffic is ludicrous, the council are a bunch of aholes, the city is over run with either meat head morons or students.

The area of the city I live in is generally lovely. Quiet, leafy etc - but it's somewhat difficult to enthuse about any area when everything surrounding it is a st hole.
