TV Aerial choice
Discussion
Just wanting to check I'm not being diddled here...
I need a new aerial, but rather than try sit through pages of charts to get the best no. of elements etc I thought I'd phone a few installers and see what they would recommend and could supply.
2 places have told me that in my specific location I DON'T want a high gain unit, and that an 18 element group A aerial will give me all digital terrestrial channels with much less issues. Maybe I've got my wires crossed but I thought Group A only did the lower 1/3rd of the band - so won't pick up all DTTV?
3rd place I tried told me I had to have high gain, but a few questions later had me convinced he only knew how to read a sales brochure, rather than working off experience and knowledge.

ahh - that site works a lot better when you check the trade box! I used wolfgang earlier which is what led to my post - the local installers were pretty convincing in their arguments, but what they stated goes completely against the linked site. Those sites don't take account of line of site etc and I'm trying to find out if there is some way that an aerial can perform better despite theoretically being totally incorrect!
I'll go and take a bearing off the current aerial later, as that works really very well despite looking about 30 years old and having a shed load of elements missing. I believe it's pointing at Hannington from memory of channel numbers, but that doesn't make a lot of sense either as that's 35 miles away, whereas we're only 4 miles away from the Southampton transmitter.

You can always add a variable attenuator before the loftbox if you have too much gain from the mast.
ironically despite being so close to the transmitter we're in a very poor reception area apparently! (we live half way down the side of a small valley, transmitters are all on the other sides of valley walls)Gassing Station | The Pie & Piston Archive | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
