not known for being the most patient of people - but what is going on!?

Normally wifey handles this sort of stuff - but unfortunately she is busy so it is my task for the moment.

All i want to do is get a hotel in St Anton from 27th Dec and check out on the 4th. This apparently isn't possible - as its not a round number. WTF?!!?

Not only that - most hotels appear to be full! The ones that aren't full are charging 2k per person for the week. I don't want to stay in the Dorchester - just a double room, with our own bathroom.

Is it because its New Year?

So i tried Morzine Avoriaz - same problems.

Not that its possible to work out which hotels are where. No maps, stupid websites.

It can't be this hard.

then i started to try and book flights - and its all st! So looks like i'm driving again, and sleeping in a fking tent

It's pretty much the most expensive time to go, I think only Feb half term week is more expensive.

A lot of it is geared up to Saturday-Saturday bookings, so they won't want you staying 8 days because people are far less likely to want 6 etc etc.

Look at some of the other resorts around which will be cheaper smile

You've picked the peak week of the season - changeover day normally Saturday so you'll have to fit round that. Have you consdiered self-catering? I know in Morzine these dates tend to get booked up a year in advance.

Sounds about right. Busiest time of year pretty much.

jesus - how do people know a year in advance whether they have the free time?!

I only found out yesterday that i can take those days off work. Thats why it has to be this week.

Plus I hate New Year in this country.

I expected it to be expensive - but not 2k per person just for hotel!

I was thinking more like 100 quid a night each max.

Do people really fit around Saturday to Saturday all the time? I've never done a package holiday so I wasn't aware. Surely that is a waste of two good days on the slopes?

Yes and yes. If you drive it's worth staying in one of the valley level chain hotels (Mercure is reasonable quality IIRC) for Friday night arriving and Saturday night leaving. That way you can squeeze an extra couple of days skiing out of the holiday.

And it's that expensive because the world and his wife want to be skiing for New Year. You either have to book early or last minute and hope there's something left.
