Good or bad?
I personally shop there in the run up to xmas, their business is very seasonal and they have some valuable brands (ladybird etc) but it looks like they are in dire straits.
Will the PH massive be supporting them this weekend by getting your Quality Street there? If not, will this familiar name (but not so familiar I can remember how to spell it !!) soon be off from the High Street?

I wanted to offer £1.50, but if I did, I would not have the £245Million of cash to pay off their creditors!!
I actually think it is quite an unusaul mix of product in the retail side, only proper HS stores with cloths, media, sweeties, toys etc, and they did it years before the Asdas of the world did in their retail parks!

I think that is true, the 44 week thing I mean. Well the retail side anyway, they also have a big wholesale media business I read (dvds etc) and a tv production company with the BBC.
Somehow, I just dont think Xmas will be the same without a last minute Christmas Eve dash round Woolies and a big bag of pick and mix in my 1970s petrol token fruit bowl!! LOL

On the High street though, I cannot think of a similar store with range of products (baby clothes, toys DVD games, sweets etc. And I always think the prices are good, but then I tend to shop last minute and get the xmas bargains!
Out local one is clean for sure but it does have a messy shop window!!

can you offer the £1.50 - but just not take on the debts ?I read just now that someone offered them £50M and take on the debts in March!! D'oh!!

I was a management trainee with them........... a long long time ago. At that time they were one of the biggest players on the high st, probably second or third behind M&S and possibly Sainsburys. The store I was in (Basingstoke) was huge and had been the anchor tennant in the then new shopping centre. The store was across two huge floors and had full grocery, greengrocery, deli and wet fish as well as furniture, white goods, electrical and huge clothing departments. They lost their way massively at the end of the eighties and through the 90's and failed to specialise at the time when Tesco, Sainsburys and Asda were moving to dominate the food sector and big specialist retailers like Dixons and Curry's were moving into larger units and taking away the specialist business. If I were them I would have gone back to where they started and become a "Dollar General" or "Dollar Tree" type outfit such as is seen everywhere in America.
I bought shares in these last week (oh dear) as I thought they had value in there somwhere, pensions deficit and debt included. The new top man has a bit of a track record for making a go of things and I was hopeing he'd grasp the opportunites presented by a recession with both hands.
It seems he's more keen on selling on the toubled arm of the business (high street) and doing what he can with the Entertainment UK business. I was also lead to belive their property was worth a few quid, even in these times and even as a leavehold.
I'm now thinking it'll go to the wall and the guy stalkinging them for their property will get his way and pick what he wants out of the runied remains.
Shame, I like the shop and my local one always seems busy. It seems they're busy but just not making money.

The shares may make sense if you believe that their distribution business has any value as that's what they will be keepinng after this move. I don't think it does long term really. On the other hand I own some woolies shares but only because I'm a lethargic 
, for me it's do or die with them!
