Might be taking up a new job near Derby in the near future, does anyone live there? Is it really as bad as everyone says?

Opinions needed!

Don't know about Derby itself, but I suspect it has the usual chav underclass that blights most county capitals in Browns Britain.

Derbyshire, the county, is very nice however. I have friends out there ( Matlock way I think ) and they love it.

No doubt someone more knowledgeable than my pointless ramblings can offer will be along soon. smile

Nuke the feckin' place and start again.

My experiences based over a few months seeing a lovely woman living in a 'nice' part of Derby.. these are just general unrelated observations that cropped up:

Car keyed (even when parked on a private drive)
Rubbish bags stolen from outside of house
Road rage
Car being spat at when driving down certain roads
Racist threats

Forget Derby and come to the better city, Nottingham. You might get stabbed, shot or both but it is still nice.

I would'nt have been too bothered if they were empty!

Yes - rubbish often got stolen from the bins (potential id fraudsters)

Has improved immeasurably over the past 20 years and is now a very pleasant little city. Having said that as a city it's always suffered in comparison to Nottingham (justifiably IMO). As already said, Derbyshire the county is very nice. Plenty of really "quality of life" towns within striking distance: Matlock, Belper to the north are good and plenty of really really nice villages. Avoid Heanor/Codnor and S Derbys in general..(OK, I'm biased being from the Peaks).

On the whole, the nice parts are nice, the not so nice parts not so nice...pretty much like any city really.

Looking on the bright side, the job could have been in Coventry. Now there's a sthole...

I live in the centre of Derby with a bunch of friends.

Within weeks of moving in my tyres had been slashed twice and the passenger side door had been bent open to steal....

Wait for it.

I left Derby in '82.

Lived in Spondon, Normanton and Allenton as well as the City Center.

Not been back there for a few years now.

Wonder if it has changed muchscratchchin

I grew up in Birmingham and can honestly say that I rate most parts of Nottingham and Derby lower than what I consider to be the "bad" parts of Birmingham.

It wouldn't stop me living there but, should I ever have any, I wouldn't want to bring my children up in either Nottingham or Derby.
