My great uncle was Sir Donald Finlay http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Finlay

Took the Olympic oath in London and refused to shake Hitlers hand in '36 (probably a tall tale that bit).

Lived near to Chequers and apparently lifted a full pre WW2 Nazi dinner service that is stashed in the family somewhere. (that story wheeled out from time to time is 99% utter tosh).

I'm descended from some Hungarian noble bloke who was on a ship that was dashed against the rocks in a storm on the north shores of the Firth of Forth. He was a nobleman of the court of St. Margaret who had come over to see her hubby to be, Malcolm of Scotland. According to family papers, this was in 1056, but some historians differ.
Anyway. my family is ultimately considered to be the one that introduced Catholicism to Scotland, which I find is a great irony, considering I am not Catholic, but I married a Catholic wife.

We don't talk about Great Grandpappy Adolf that much, but I think he was quite big in European politics at some time.

I've got fairly direct descendancy from the last of the German Kaisers (which in turn puts me across to the British royals by one additional marriage... that's pretty cool... however, distant descendancy to Joachin Ribbentrop isn't...

oh well,,, can't have them all...

at least my great great great uncle was a bit of a lad... quite the fly-boy until his Zeppelin was shot down over the thames!

:-)

i don't know whether he did... my late grandfather put together a book of our family tree, and one of the branches headed in the direction of Ricthofen, with others heading in the directions of those other people mentioned in my earlier post...

it's all pretty cool really with some real heroes in the distant family... all bar one avenue (as mentioned before)... hey ho

Distantly related to the girl Lewis Carrol (Mr Dodgeson) wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland about. The name Liddell (the girl's surname) is still handed down in my family each generation.
