Attention PH Washing Machine Gurus..........

Help required.......

We have a grey Hotpoint Aquarious WF 340 washer (1400 spin) which was working fine until 10 minutes ago.....

The machine is as new and around two/three years old, although it is used twice daily...

Mrs WR now informs me it will not go on to the final fast spin speed, leaving the clothes so you can wring them out...She also informs me that when this has happened before on other Hotpoint machines, usually just fitting new brushes cured the problem...

So, is this likely to be the case, and if so, if I buy some are they easy to fit??

Can't help with the actual problem, but when i was working at John Lewis electrical dept, Hotpoint w/m had a free parts warranty, cant remember if its 2, 3 or 5 years. May be worth checking any paperwork you got with the machine (although i would be suprised if they let you fit them, they will most likely insist parts are free but charge a ton for fitting).

Yeah, I think the parts are free...(£15) but they charge around £80 call out...

I know a good local guy who is not a cowboy, but if I can sort it myself it would be the best (and cheapest) option.......

A few things to check first, in case its something simple.

1) Is the water being pumped out from the drum fully? If the sensor sees water it won't spin.
2) Is the filter clean and clear? same reason as above.
3) Is the belt broken/displaced?
4) Does the selector 'click' to spin, they like to go u/s or get stuck

If you can get the door open (prob need to wait a bit after switching off the mains) you may find water left in the machine. The debris filter before the pump could be blocked with coins

Yea, but be sure not to open the filter with a drum full of water unless you want to create a Tsunami in your kitchen.

Nearly every problem we've ever had with washing machines was due to either a blocked filter or worn-out carbon brushes, in every case fixable without calling an engineer. If it's the brushes, you may be lucky and find that the motor is mounted high up just under the top cover, in which case it's an easy job. Some are a bit harder to get at.

Thanks, that's what I thought...I'll get some brushes, fit them, at least it will eliminate them...and report the results back to this thread....

Motor brushes shouldn't be worn out with that level of use at 2/3 years. I would look at the filter first. They are usually underneath on hotpoints & abit messy to get to (but not impossible)

Update as promised:-

Got the local repair guy round..he said brushes were only about 50% worn.....there were several loose coins in the filter...(65p)...but then he found the fault.....the dial on the front of the machine must have been accidentely knocked onto "no spin"......

So, 20 mins and £20 later he was on his way...at least we didn't have to pay Hotpoint's hefty callout charge......plus we are 65p better off...

Anyhow, thanks for all the helpful. replies...just remember to look for the obvious.....
