URGENT - Heating/Boiler Advice needed!

Hey all

We have an Ideal Gas boiler and the flame has gone out. All i've got on the unit is a thermostat knob and on/off switch.

Can anyone tell me how i go about relighting it please? Or if i should just call an engineer?

Heating has been fine and was on when we left the house this morning. Coming home around 6pm and the house was cold. We switched it on and only after an hour i noticed the house hadn't warmed up! Thermostat is on, heating panel by tank is on, you can hear water running through the radiators but they're cold still! Checked the boiler, can't see any flame and my wife is now panicking as the house is getting colder and we have a week old daughter.

We don't have a contract on the boiler or BG home care currently.

Is anyone able to offer any advice please?

Have you got it on Timed or thermostat?

Just stick it on thermostat and turn that up, see what happens or put a hot tap on and leave it running

I had a new gas meter recently and the chap spent a while wondering where the pilot light was on the boiler. You just turn it on and either the rads or taps start it up

Do the rads need bleeding?

Try and see if one dials has an R next to it, if you turn it towards it it might click to reset the boiler. This normally works when our pilot goes iut after a power cut. Failing that try finding the manual on the internet.

Unfortuately i've tried it with the thermostat and the hot water taps (not a lot of hot water there) and also the radiators. None make any difference to the boiler.

If i ring BG, will they charge a call out fee and more, or am i able to take the home care and then that cover the call out?

I have an Ideal boiler (these instructions are for the C24/C28, S24/S28) and all it says us to light the boiler then you have to ensure the valve is open, which is probably is if it has been working then switch on the power supply, and then the LED should flash every 2 seconds. So, not really very technical.

When I bled my radiators earlier this year I then switched the heating back on but nothing happened. Because so much air had been bled out of the system it had lost pressure so I had to repressurise the system by putting more water in via the filling loop. Have you bled your radiators recently?

You can either have a £99 fixed price repair from BG which could be expensive if the boiler is basically OK just needs resetting or whatever.

Or you can take out the homecare thingy but with an initial breakdown. In which case for the first year it is £27/month vs £17.

Its an Ideal, Classic LXFF & FF Fanned Flue Gas Boiler

Its got a boiler size stamp on the instructions of FF230

Have you repressurised the system like PlanetClaire suggested. If you've bled all your rads, the pressure Will be down, possibly enough to stop it working. You need to find your filling loop and pressure guage.

what do you need heating on for it is 12 deg in my living room and I dont have the heating on.

The pressure should be as a absolute minimum 0.5bar with everything cold. Ideally about 1 bar it should really be. Well thats the way it should be with our Baxi boiler. Wouldn't have thought yours would be that different.

Radiators being bled was done a while ago and system was checked then so definately nothing to do with radiators or pressure in system.

Staceyb - thanks for the link to the manuals etc.

The manual says,

Problem Solution
Boiler is not working for
central heating or hot water.

• Press overheat thermostat (E) - the boiler should then relight – If the fault recurs turn off the

boiler and contact the installer.

Problem is the thermostat switch is not really a switch! More of a screw that doesn't move. My father in law says the switch is probably in the middle, but there;s no way of getting to it as this piece is down the right hand side of the unit.

Helpful....very helpful! Its obviously a darn side colder in South Wales than Lancashire then eh!

There's no pressure indicator on the boiler??!!

Might well be low on pressure then.

Right, so walk us through what you've got.

The boiler - whats on the front of it. There must be a gauge..?
Thermostat - is there a remote controller for it?
Rads - do they have thermostats on them?
