From 2011 according to the Guardian, so at least a few years. Still ridiculous

Grainne Gilmore (guardian):
At last - some comment on Sir James Crosby's mortgage review, which has been put on back burner.. but it sounds like it has been shelved again, with only a consultation being launched. It was first commissioned in April this year, and the Government indicated that it could come up with solution to seizure in mortgage market.

The Chancellor is going to phase in the road tax increases announced last year.

They must do, because Darling stated they will: 5% extra on earnings over £150K (if they get in at the next election).

anyone got the details for this:

4:30pm: Appropriately enough, there's a u-turn on the car tax fuel efficiency bands. The cost of running a large polluting gas-guzzler will rise by less than expected - just £5 a month.

So pretty much the only people benifiting from this will be the retailers.

Nice.

THe current bandings will stay in place for next year, each going up by no more than £5. In 2010 they will introduce the re-banding (£400 or whatever for the "most polluting") that was going to happen next year.

anything on reducing stamp duty? (IMHO the smartest fiscal way to get house prices stabilised, moving activity up, so prices up and consumer confidence up)

As I understand it, the VAT cut comes in from Monday, but doesn't include booze/cigs, so they are not actually going up.

yes, but it would be an admission of error and would go against deep-seated ideological beliefs.

Stamp duty could be abolished-it wouldn't sort this mess out! The market is going one way & one way only & 1st time buyers(the lift blood) know it..........

EFA.

So,

  • VAT down to encourage people into shops.
  • As somebody else pointed out on a different thread, plan backfires as £9.99 item will remain at £9.99 and not £9.78, retailer will hang onto extra (understandably)
  • Fuel, booze & cigaratte duty increased
  • NI increased.
So, of course, we are worse off! How stupid do they think we are? Answer: very, and in most cases probably right rolleyes
