What on earth can anyone do to improve the lot of the poor people across this continent that is hugely rich in natural resources & extremely diverse.

Is there any way of dragging it into the "developed world", or is the indiginous population doomed to suffer from endemic corruption ad-infinitum?

Are you watching Panorama by any chance?

As it is, the Chinese own all of Africa's resources now...

According to friends who live (or lived) in Africa, many problems arise because tribal connections are more important than country.

Yes, I am. However, I have also visted a few African countries over the past fifteen years or so & can just never fathom how one could go about enabling the populations to start building profitable industry, gaining better education & generally moving into an imporving spiral.

No the Chinese don't.

and no Africa will not become a developed continent in your life time, or your kids or your grand kids.

Not for a long long time, if ever.

There would have been many years ago, what happens is a mini industrial revolution, factories are built, and things get a bit polluted.

Europe had one, so did the US in a way, and China is currently doing that, but the global forces now complain about it. It's a bit of a shame, as we did it, and got rich, but no won't allow others to do the same.

Mines, furnaces, refineries etc, but most of Africa would be banned from clearing forests.
The UK countryside isn't natural in the slightest, a wood/ forest is the natural thing, fields and hedgerows are all man's impact.

Huge forested areas were cut down for timber for charcoal, ship building, heating, housing etc.

I suppose the developed world is giving a little wisdom in saying don't destroy what you have, but it's the only way to get started.

The New Forest is also man made, planted to regrow wood for our battleships.

I don't ever see it being corruption free, any more than i see black kids in the UK not being involved in gangs and trouble. Sure there are exceptions and good and bad in every race. As for blacks, the numbers of crime proportiante to their numbers is larger than any other race. That is not a rwcist statement at all, and neither do i intend it to be. It is just a fact of numbers.

Likewise the continent of Africa, which should be a wealthy nation given the vast natural resources it has is a 3rd world continent with corruption, crime and an inability to manage itself. The exception being South Africa, which surprise surprise was established and run by non blacks.

Like i say this is not a racist jibe at all, before the lefties jump in and accuse me of being some neo nazi. It is fact, uncomfortable fact i agree, but fact none the less.

I've worked in Nigeria, Gabon, Eritrea, Egypt, South Africa, and the Congo... Africa will not go anywhere under their current 'psychology', if you know what I mean.

yea, in fact i'm pretty sure there is only a minute portion of actual "ancient" forestry still around, most of the stuff today was created / managed at some stage.

Imagine what the UK would have been like if there were campaigning tree huggers around, tying themselves to the big oaks, and lobbying the government to stop cutting stuff down.

Africa is quite a mix though, there are huge rainforests, but also arid deserts.
The forests and probably out of bounds now, but how far away are the deserts from large areas of Australia ( ahem, in terms of landscape...)

200 years turned that dustbowl into something pretty successful.

The problem with African is the Africans, but you can't say that as its racist. The world has given them a handout, and they've got the hand out mentality - why work to improve yourself when the UN will give you free food.
Ok, that's not a fair comment for all africans, but it applies to a lot.

And before anyone jumps on me about this as has happened before, my wife is African and I hear the tales first hand from her and her family that work with and do charity work for the locals. The ones I've had dealings with are usually the friendliest people you will ever meet, but bloody useless in a work environment. It's not a lack of skills, but a lack of understanding that you need to be switched on and dynamic to achieve. When people die in mines because they fancied a sleep in the middle of a road driven by 20 ton trucks, you have to wonder if all the lights are switched on upstairs. Maybe if they had to think a bit more, they would

Its not necessarily their fault, blame the providers of handouts. Asia didn't have the handouts and it made them work for what they have.

One can draw similarities with the dole bludgers over here - why work when if you don't it will be given to you.

Hmmm, sorry if that doesn't flow, the JD has so far tonight (Hic!)

yes

Doesn't help when someone puts a border round a few tribes and makes it a country, it ends up with them all fighting for control of the country (Shona and Matabele for example in Zim)

Actually, Australia is pretty fked - it's farms are so large because the soil quality is so poor, you can only get one harvest from a field before it is useless for ever. This is partly due to it not being downstream of any airborne volcanic activity.

Australia's success is inspite of it's farming - the deserts are returning to Oz rapidly.

Then the continent would just get exploited by the whitey rather than a fellow dark face.

Let them crack on with it. Left to their own devices they'll run it into the ground. All they've ever wanted is for "the west" to get out of their land. The examples where "the west" has done that, the results are evident. I could watch an episode of Panorama concerning the plight of Africa and I won't so much as bat an eye. They bring it on themselves.

But the continent is not being exploited by any darkies they are just running around hacking each others arms off.

Take Zimbabwe as an example it has loads and loads of farmland which was run by the evil whiteman and the country was well fed and lots of darkie were employed by those evil whiteys. Then along came a nice darkie who took all the farmland away from the evil whitemen and gave it to the good darkies. Now the country is starving and broke. but most important the darkies are now free from the evil whitemen, they are also free to starve to death at the roadside.
