I've recently discovered I can no longer drink significant amounts of milk without becoming a bloated fart-machine, which is apparently due to lactose intolerance.

Is it treatable in any way, or the usual course of action for it? Obviously avoiding dairy products is the first step, but having been brought up on a dairy farm it's quite difficult for me.

What are the alternatives? Is there anything I can have with cereal other than yuck soya yuck milk? I'm thinking lactose-free milk if such a thing exists?

Yes there is such a thing. It's called Lactofree or something like that - can also get it in yoghurt.

Has a picture of a cow on the front and is in a white carton.

Brother suffers from it. Fridge is full of this. Enjoy.

Bagels for breakfast. With honey, since you can't have philly cheese or butter.

Practise drinking tea / coffee without milk and you'll soon get used to it....

I don't suffer from lactose intolerance but I can't help but think this would be a great name for a band.

Sorry. As you were.

15 month old son is lactose intolerant and always has been. You can pretty much get anything without dairy in nowadays so he doesn't suffer at all. We hope he'll grow out of it at some point.

Same with our 13 month old. Dairy Free Cheese is disgusting though.

I had the same problem a year or so ago......one of my friends gave me some homeopathic tablets that apparently replenish the bacteria required to process the lactose. A month or so of taking these and I was back drinking pints of milk again.

Just out of interest you haven't recently swapped from dinking fresh unpasteurised milk to the supermarket bought variety have you?

Forgot to say I look out the name of the tablets and post back tomorrow.

Thanks for the suggestions. I used to have museli and a nice big latte for breakfast yum so maybe half a pint or so, but would get stomach cramps later in the day - after toast and a much less milky coffee, I'm fine.

I'll grab some of that Lactofree - and no, no Chinese, I'm an English/ Irish mongrel.

Just reading about it on Wikipedia, it appears that almost everyone in the West gets it to some degree as they get older.

lay off it for a few months and slowly reintroduce. Keep it to a moderate level as you will be prone to it coming back

hmm i also suffer with this if i drink milkshakes or just milk or yoghurts but in tea and coffee im fine, but i also get these symptoms from salad peppers now when i eat even the smallest bit of pepper i really can clear the hole of a suburban town never mind the house!!! hehe it can be funny but the stomach cramps and stinky poos are not that much fun!!

Lactofree just tastes like normal milk to me. Obviously much more expensive.

Ex-GF had this quite badly, and quite a lot of food has dairy in too. She took some tablets from Holland & Barrett which had some sort of lactose enzyme in, said it helped when eating foods you know might have some dairy in.

Hi, sorry to hear this. I know how you feel, I'm allergic to all dairy products and it's a pain as I love cappuccino's!

On cereal I find the nicest thing is rice milk by 'rice dream'. If you're a coffee fiend like me you may find the apple-sweetened variety of soya (Alpro) the best for cappuccino and the unsweetened in tea is better. Alpro is the best for taste because it has no added flavours which spoil your tea.

I hated soya milk when I first tried it BUT stick with it as you definitely get used to the taste, start by using a small amount in tea till your taste buds adjust.. trust me..they will.

Hope this helps,
Mrs allegroyum
