I could not believe it yesterday when, having worked here for nearly 2 years, the trainee struggled to convey the office phone number to a client. Success was only achieved after much fumbling & production of a business card.
Upon querying this, I was then informed "I don't even know my mobile number, it's in the phone".
I fear this is the tip of the iceberg.

A reporter interviewed Albert Einstein. At the end of the interview, the reporter asked if he could have Einstein's phone number so he could call if he had further questions.
“Certainly” replied Einstein. He picked up the phone directory and looked up his phone number, then wrote it on a slip of paper and handed it to the reporter.
Dumbfounded, the reporter said, "You are considered to be the smartest man in the world and you can't remember your own phone number?”

I know my work, landline (even though only recently changed) mobile, my hubby's mobile, my Mum & Dad's number and I can still remember my grandads phone number (sadly passed away almost a yr ago) and our 1st homes phone no. There are several others that I can recall whilst sat here typing this, some still relevant others not.
There are many I don't memorise because they are in my phone but I think it's good practice to memorise some.

I know my personal mobile number as I've had the same one for over 10 years. Although my best mate has also kept his number as long and I know I couldn't recall it accurately.
Home landline number - nope, never use it.
Work mobile number - nope, have to dig out a business card (but then anyone asking for it would get a business card anyway).
Office phone number - nope, it used to be area code then the company name (7-letter company name fits nicely with the keypad letter thing). However we got bought by another company and can't refer to that any more which means some thinking and looking at a keypad to jog my memory.
For colleagues - the ones I'd need out and about are in my work phone, for anyone else we run Office Communicator in house so just pick them off a list and hit call.
Trouble is, with the huge shift towards mobile use, any number you'll ring more than once ends up saved then you never have to remember it again. It's not like the days of having to use someone else's phone (I remember having one of those BT cards so I could use someone else's and have it charged back to my bill!) which would involve either retaining the number in your head or writing it down somewhere.
I side with Einstein though - there really is no point committing things to memory if you have reliable, quick-to-access methods to retrieve the information when you need it.

back on topic, I know my home land line, and my own mobile. That's it. I have over 100 contacts in my mobile, some that I ring every day, all from the contact list of course. I have no idea what my wifes or childrens mobile numbers are.
im sad and can remember loads of phone numbers
i can remember customers numbers, postcodes and account numbers (i used to be able to remember my top five customers card numbers as well (saved time when charging invoices), but dont bother now)
i can also remember virtually all the part numbers we use at work and can part number a mini from front to back bumper if required.....sad or what?

Directory enquiries used to be a helpful scource for information when there was an operator on the line especially with their local knowledge if you had not got all the details.
Sadly gone are the days of a personal service
now replaced with these wretched recorded announcements that keep you holding on for ages.
Like BecksW I can remember many family and friends numbers past and present.
How many of you remember your doctors number or hospital in case of emergency?
