I have absolutely no sympathy for these clowns - how are people supposed to be encouraged to move from cars to trains when you have this sort of nonsense.
I will pay it you bloodsucking lowlife cretins then sit, alone, in a gigantic gas gussling car and drive back to London.
Then, I am going to drive the same car to places I want to go instead of taking the train there and if I hear people moan about the environment and why I should use public transport, will use your stupid brochure as loo paper and throw it at them.

Tell me you're not THAT naive?!?The TOC's know the cost of private transport, and set their prices accordingly. In addition, pretty much every stage down the chain is a private contractor who's going to make sure they get their pound of flesh out of the system...
In short, we probably have, per mile, the most expensive train network in the world, yet in terms of rolling stock (let alone reliability) is 2nd rate as compared to most of the rest of the Western World. Welcome to privatisation gone wrong...

Switzerland is expensive for trains but you get what you pay for (stunning service....absolutely amazing actually) whereas here....good god

I know booking first class London to Stafford is £38 in advance, but £125 on the day.
around 5pm it was 24
booked about 2 hours later or so - 47
I appreciate that if I just walked up there tomorrow morning, then they would hit me for the full whack but the above is just daylight robbery.
I would be more inclined to use a train to see more of the UK but given the ongoing track work that seems to take place every Sunday (I want to see this feat of engineering that must equal the digging of the Panama Canal considering the cost and delays) but I am just going to hop into the car and drive there. £50 of fuel will get me about 280 miles which is a greater distance than London to Bath.

On the other hand, if you plan in advance, train tickets can be really cheap.
Booked tickets for my mum to come down from Manchester to South Wales for Christmas - total cost including post and booking fee was £24, return.
That's amazingly good value and a hell of a lot cheaper than doing it in the car.
The downside is that I had to book these tickets 2 months in advance and be very flexible over dates and times.

I can beleive that, as I've done the trip from Stafford a few times. Not skilled enough yet to work out exactly what the best times/methods of ticketing are, but it can be done fairly cheaply. Book a week in advance and you can do it for chump change. As I mentioned above 1st class, 1 way, £38.took the car £20 return and £2 for the parking meter.

k the public transport system.As with airlines, roll up at the airport the day you want to fly, buy a full fare ticket, and you'll pay through the nose. Book well in advance and you'll get it a lot cheaper.

I would say Switzerland is on a par with the UK for prices. Of course their network is much simpler than ours but trains are nicer and more punctual.Just paid them - I though they wear a mask when robbing you???

Last year I fked up royally, got to the airport to fly sleazyjet to Munich to meet the gf there and found I'd booked t Milan 
Arrived in Munich several hours later and with a very very large hole in the pocket.
It was a great shag though
