Why does it offend so many people?? personaly i couldn't give a st if i'm reading something in upper or lower case. Some people realy get flamed for it.

Well, given that people are often (virtually) hanged for as little as a missed comma, you would have thought that noticing that an entire post had been written in upper case would require the very minimum of proof-reading.

Exactly.

If you ask a reasonable question, it is usually asked in a nice softly spoken and friendly manner. You don't usually ask a reasonable question screaming at the top of your lungs just inches away from peoples faces as Mr Angry. Which is how block capitals can appear. At least, it always does to me, and that was before I knew it was a genuine issue of internet etiquette and many others felt the same way.

really, IMO, do the people who right entire posts in caps even look at there screen before they hit post, personally I always look at the screen so then I can see when I make mistakes and correct them, or do they just think, "I'm to lazy to hit one button before I start typing so Ill annoy all of these fine people on this forum"

I know what you're saying. It's as though everyone needs a gce in reading and writing before you're allowed to post on ph sometimes. I admit i did not attend much school and left when i was 14 so no qualifications here i'm afraid.

This is because lower case has "uppers" and "downers"- i.e. letters that reach upwards to the top of the line and letters which reach down below the line. Your brain can recognise the patters of these so things written in lower case are easier to read. Block capitals don't have uppers or downers, so they require the reader to read very carefully.

For the same reason people use 'please' and 'thank you' in life. There is no real need for it, but it makes life more pleasant, shows a degree of respect and civility, and a modicum of culture and good breeding.
