Was in subway earlier having a nice meatball marina and in stumbles a drunk tramp asking for money for the phone box. With a mouthfull of food i politely told him to get the fvck out my face after he tried to sit down next to me aswell! mad there was nobody even in the place!
Funny thing is though i saw another one outside asking people for money, the one who had been hassling me saw him too and went outside. Then at the same time by the door asked eachother for money not realising they were both after the same thing! hehe

You amaze me in such a classy joint. Didn't the Maitre De and the wine waiter eject him?

I always employ the "tell me the truth and you might get some money strategy":

In Texas, I was approached by a little fat chap outside my hotel who, with much quite well acted shortness of breath, said he needed money for asthma medicine - "Look" I said "here's 10 bucks, tell me want you really want it for and I'll give it to you" - "I'm going to buy dope!" he says straightaway.

I was, however, hoist with this petard in Edinburgh when a bloke asked for £2 for the shelter. "You just want the money for drugs" I said. "No!" He's says, "Look - I've got drugs" - shows me package - " I need somewhere to kip".

One of my friends really pulled one on a bloke who asked for money to get to the next town by driving him there...

No-one in them speaks English and tramps tend to wonder in asking for change. . . . .

If you must indulge your baser instincts, at least don't eat in.

Why didn't you tell him to sell his drugs and then use the money on some shelter?

You've got to admire their business model though - getting people to pay £5 for a 50p roll filled with a 99p can of Campbells 'Meatballs' and 25p worth of salad and plastic cheese. . . . .

True, it seems to work too. And I understand that a lot of it is franchised, so they don't have to do a great deal either.... the strength of the brand gives them the earning power.
