One of my goldfish is broken. Do I?

As the title says, one of my goldfish is broken lying on his side and struggling to swim.

To his credit the other fish keeps nudging him and trying to move him but its not working for the little fella.

What should I do.

Whatever you do don't burn it. We tried cremating one once, built a little funeral pyre and set it ablaze in the garden. Burned nicely for about 5 minutes to reveal a pile of ashes and a pristine, unburned goldfish. Probably should have dried it out first.

How are you proposing to put it out of it's misery? I cannot imagine your friends/family will look back with any fondness to you stamping a Goldfish to death...

Odd just had that chat with SWMBO, not a clue how to kill it, plus is assisted suicide legal for pets?

Sounds like swimbladder problems. Particularly common in fancy goldfish, probably because they've been bred to have their organs cramped up in a weirdly shaped body. He may recover. He may not. Is he still eating?

If you do decide to euthanise, do it properly. Don't freeze or flush. You won't be able to get MS-222 or benzocaine, but oil of cloves or carbon dioxide work - the other alternative to what they suggest is soda water. Or a sharp smack on the head with the edge of the table, but people can be a bit squeamish about that kind of thing.

First of all take it away from the other fish in case it is infected with something and infects the others. You may also want to change the existing water once you have removed him.

Oh, and the nudging isn't particularly affectionate - once it dies and starts to get mushy enough, the other fish will eat it.

You can humanely kill with Clove Oil, just puts em to sleep. Check it's not just an infected swim bladder though, it may be treatable.

Still eating, so worth getting some fishy get better pills?

Have some oil of cloves here though, and a spare tank. Is it worth splitting them up?

If unsaveable then remove from tank, hit round/top of head.

Its not nice, and they do twitch for a while, but its the right thing to do
