Gas or Oil?

we're currently on brilliant Eco 7 night storage heaters, and can't wait to get shot.
So we're down to the two choices Gas or Oil.
Gas boilers cost around £400 with a £500 connection charge, Oil boilers are £750 and 1000 litre tanks are around £400.
Balanced flues are about the same.
What would you go for?

Gas, no top ups required, no tank servicing.

Oil, is it cheaper? Doesn't seem to be to me.

If you are any where near a water course you will need a bunded tank, which will double the cost of the tank
Also, would be more helpfull if you get a 2000 ltr tank as oil is cheaper the larger the quantity you buy it in.

Why not? We have one for our 3 bed semi. Does us fine. Filled once a year.

I have a 2 bed cottage. I have a 1000l trank and I put 500l in twice a year so. 1000l a year.

Last 500l I bought cost me £200.

I have a 1000l tank, I fill it once a year. 4 bed bunglaow.

The price falls if you buy over about 1500l at a time. The step is very small though, typically 0.10p/l.

I am in an simlar situation currently running oil. I have started looking at some of the wood pellet burners as an long term option. Gas and oil will go one way once this crunch is behind us IMO.

All gas boilers are more efficient than oil boilers, even poorest gas boilers are better than the best oil ones.

As for prices, cheapest energy is currently electic!
I would be inclined to go for gas, but then again,w ho knows what the utility companies will do to rip up off when everyone is unemployed and thir bad debts go through the roof!

I didnt realise some properties could be so efficient , ours has a 2500 litre tank

LOL you must have a) a very big house and b)a not very efficient house. How often do you fill a 2500L tank?

I've got a 1200L tank for a 2 bed semi and it will last 10months or so between fills.

My GOD! Most houses in village are big 5 - 8 bedroom houses. They all have less than 2000l. That is a big tank.

We are currently burning about 170 litres a week

I don't have a choice as there is no gas in the villiage, however I have an 1100 litre tank and I reckon that it would last me a year, thats a combi boiler that does the water and heating I do have an electric shower etc so water heating is minimal.

The only things that i find a pain is that you have to check monitor the level (or order in advance) and that some s come in the dead of night and nick your 500 litres... make sure you fit a lock

We use about 3500 litres per year. We have a 2500 litre tank. Last filled it first week of August, will be topping up next week with approx 650litres as price is good at the mo. House has 14 rooms of which 10 are always heated, we have a seperate pump and stat for 4 rooms that are heated about 40% of the time in winter.

Just been checking the prices, our normal supplier states that deliveries less than 800 litres carry 2p/l surcharge.
