A few lookouts with night vision goggles and phalanx guns should do the trick.
It just needs a change in attitude. Fire hoses don't work. Can you imagine Commandos hijacking the Tirpitz while Herr Kapitan squirts them with water? More like 'It's A Knockout' than war.

Actually GB in the formative years of Empire did quite well capturing foreign ships laden with riches. It was called Privateering. The proceeds were divided between captain, crew and Sovereign, with whose permission is was done.

Exactly what i though. Given the amount of money the insurers are paying out you would think they would insist on armed guards. Half a dozen men plus equipment just while they pass through the area, must be worth it.Simpo Two said:

but any sort of firearms are banned from tankers under international maritime law for obvious reasons. I guess the only way forward is a protected convoy system. Mind you Egypt are getting upset at reduced traffic through Suez canal as many vessels now choose to go the long way round.
Maybe its over the top but could you not have a helipad on a tanker with a fairly heavily armed gunship? Then as soon as you spot anyone hostile you send the chopper off to intercept. I appreciate they cost a hell of a lot to buy/maintain but if I was carrying a few hundred millions worth of cargo I'd want it well protected.
