1.8m, with 8m "economically inactive"
Christ that's a lot of scroungers (obviously not including people who've fallen on hard times or genuinly have proper illnesses)

This idea that there is less than 2 million unemployed always seemed crazy to me. It's another example of spin where the figures are manipulated to the extent that they are meaningless. It's the same with inflation figures - the government just change the criteria to make the numbers say what they want them to say.

And don't forget all the non-jobs in the public sector - with their fat pension and benefits packages. If you split the population into GDP contributors and non-contributors, I think it would be quite frightening.
In many towns now over half those working work for the state. Add on those reliant on the state through benefits and there is a 'client state' majority in many regions. JagLover said:

The frightening thing is how are all these benefits going to be paid? The credit crunch is leading to a collapse in tax revenues to the Treasury. Stamp Duty on property transfer has virtually vanished, CGT will be nugatory as everything is down in value, corporation tax receipts will be much lower as any decent finance director will be writing off assets and generally f
king with his balance sheet. Oh and of course The Badger's cut VAT too. So guess who's gonna pay? The middle income earners through increased income tax/NI, not that there'll be many of them left...
Darling's poppycock spend/borrow predictions in the pre-budget report are laughably way way below what will be required without cutting public services. FWIW I would love to see Labour win the next election just to stop the public sector Unions bleating about "Tory Cuts".
We simply cannot afford to go on like this.

I can only thank God that the Labour Govt hasn't gotten this country involved in some nonsensical wars abroad, which would cost this country a fortune and create ill-will against us within the international community such as to create a two-fingered response when we go cap in hand...Erm...
Doh!!

What makes me laugh is that Labour are doing better and better in the polls.
They announce that everyone will be paying an extra 0.5% NI, the public finances are shot, and that everyone earning over a 100K should bend over for a shafting and the public seem pleased.
Voting requires age, a pen and self-interest not intelligence or understanding. They announce that everyone will be paying an extra 0.5% NI, the public finances are shot, and that everyone earning over a 100K should bend over for a shafting and the public seem pleased.
