Recently, money wise, things have not been so good, the constant battle for planning permission on a property we have been given has taken its toll on our finely balanced financial situation.

My wages, cover all the bills (council tax, utilities ect), insurance and other bits and getting to and from work, thats about it really.

Because of this, we where really struggling, like seriously trying hard to make rent ect, So my wife took a job. Its not the best paid job but £900 is £900 more a month, or so we thought....

Child care comes to £195 per week!!! leaving us with £120 extra per month, Its hard to find the motiviation to get to work knowing this and she's starting to get pissed off, which is understandable.

If she quit her job, no childcare, plus family allowance of £130 per week, so it seems we are better off without her working!?

What the hell should i be looking at doing? this is a genuine plea for advice chaps, not i need a good kick when im down free for all.

Our rent is £775 per month and i need to find this from somewhere.

We are going to have a chat about everything tonight, but i dont know where to start, she's really upset and i dont have anything reassuring to say because if im honest, im not sure wtf we should do!

Thats not going to garner you a great deal of sympathy McL.

Do the sums, if your MRs is really upset, is it possible to survive without the £120? it might be worht while. Could she get another job that she doesnt hate so much? Can you cut back on £120 per month of stuff you dont need (I appreciate that at this time of year that isnt easy)

Can your folks help with childcare?

What's your property situation then? Renting in one and trying to do up the other, subject to planning?

Is the property you've been given liveable in the meantime?

You're caught in a trap.
There's no way out.

Take the benefits and do some cash work on the side I guess? I know technically it's illegal but everyone else does it, right?

There's no magic spell that's really going to get you out of this other than hard work. Sorry.

I'm not entirely surprised you may be better off with one of you not working tbh. Its the great way our country works.

Would you be in a position for her to child mind other people's kids and make money that way?

And now I've done the serious bit:
Everyone agreed you were punching above your weight with your missus. She was a hottie iirc. Are you familiar with the movie, Indecent Proposal...

I wasnt after any sympathy, just advise from people who may have been here before really mate.

This house has been in my family for 15years? its just a shell as it was built slightly out of the origional plans, the enforcement on it has been void for years and its an on going battle to get the permission, i will have to pay £10k back to my parents when/if we get it.

My mother, is a genuine mentalist, she's got a personality dissorder, we dont speak anymore, nor does my brother have anything to do with her. My stepfather is also a .

My father would have my daughter but he's working as well and i wouldnt trust his wife to look after hamster let alone my daughter.

I really need rid of some of the cars i have, but being so close to xmas not much is selling sadly.

Can she get a different job, working evenings and weekends? That way you can mind the children while she is at work and any money she makes is profit. For example a part time bar job should bring in at least £250 a month just doing 2 evenings and one day at the weekend.

This would leave you better off, she would be working less and seeing more of the children (and therefore hopefully happier). The only downside is that you would have slightly less time to spend together.

A very good idea, however dont you need qualifications to do that? i'm also sure it has to be at the parents house for some legal reason or another?

PR for a local nightclub. They need extra staff Friday/Saturday where the loss in sleep wont hurt so much. Just dont fall in to the trap of drinking all you earn!

Or even bar work on Friday/Saturday nights. Again, nights your normal job shouldnt suffer from the sleep loss and outside the hours you'd normally be working if you were called in on a weekend.

Check this out to find out exactly what help may be there for you both if she does or does not work. http://www.turn2us.org.uk/benefits_search.aspx

Sadly this country does tend to offer slightly more help to those who will not help themselves.

I don't think you need quals to be a childminer, just a local council check and a CRB.You can childmind at your own house but it has to be OK'd by the LC I think...

When I was between around 7 - 14 ish, my Dad would work days (he's a painter) and my Mum would work nights (shift supervisor)

They worked 7am-3pm and 8pm - 3am respectively. Wasnt much of a life thinking back on it, but they werent in a position to pay someone money to look after us, and would rather have had one parent with both me and my sister when we were at home

I dunno, but I like you a bit more having read this.
No sensible advice to offer though I am afraid.
Childcare costs are one of the single biggest flaws to our society at the moment!
Perhaps get her to train into childcare? Solve everything

The only problem i see with that is, Swindon is a fair way from my house, which will be the only place other than Oxford with clubs ect, there are a few pubs around locally so i'll check it out.

Wont having a second job subject me to higher tax ect?

You know, this makes me feel very stupid indeed, her current job could be done from home, rather than in the office, she could ask to work from home! It's at least worth asking!?

In exactly the same situation as you at the moment McL - (only I haven't been given a free house hehe )

Wife is at her first day back to work today after maternity leave, at the end of the month she'll be worse off than if she were on benefits after we've paid for the childcare. Sucks really, doesn't it!

Sorry nothing helpful to add really, as I can't see a way out of this creek I'm in myself. Just a "know what you mean" post.
