Looking at it on Ordnance Survey, shows it as a reservoir - nothing sinister

Are you meaning the figure of 8 in the grass and the other shape next to it?

it will be water reservoir. You can see the steep banks. It will be in a high point in that area. Water is pumped to it for storage. Gravity then takes care of supply pressure.

Good work! That would explain the large trail on the ground where some pipe excavation has been recently done for a number of miles to the east.
