ok smart folk, what the hell is this?

Seeing the world's finest brains on here cracked the reservoir puzzle so quickly, maybe we need to bump this up a notch.

What the hell is this?








My in-laws bought it in some weird shop for some odd reason.

It extends out to 3 x it's original length. It is made to a very high quality out of wood. For each number on the left, there is a gauge of 1, 3, V, 7, N on the right. It's approx 1.6m stowed and approx 4.8m extended.

Some sort of staff.

It's a measuring staff for elevations, usually used with theodolite or total station.

Is it self supporting? In that will it stand up on its own?

If so, my best guess would be some kind of surveyors measuring tool.

That's what I thought, but I am a bit confused by the gauge on the right. Can anyone explain what the significance of that sequence is?

it's a mix of different numerals, V is Roman 5 for example, so it makes it clearer to see and long distances, not sure of why they use N instead of X though, probably to relate to it being either 0 or 10

No, the surveyor has to have a chum...he sets the level up,his mate stands the staff on a bench mark,the surveyor notes which line he can seee through the level...his mate then places the staff on another point,the surveyor reads the staff again throught he level..from these two readings he can calculate the relative heights of the two points or,if the height ASL of the bench mark is known, then the actual altitude of the second point can be found....I think...

Bloody obvious now you mention it. 1,3,V,7,N is 1,3,5,7,9.

Now the obvious question, why the fk did they buy it and what the hell are they going to do with it?

It's in feet on the left, but odd that the right side is not in inches, but 1/10ths of a foot.
