Old Ipod and new Itunes on a new laptop.

Got myself a new macbook, now if i plug the ipod into the macbook will i be able to take me songs off the ipod or is it going to try and format the ipod?

Tried it once before and it formatted it, now i have 4000 songs that i dont want to lose, does anyone know if it will and if it does is there a way round it to place my songs on the macbook?

Just sorted this myself yesterday...

Download Yamipod for free.

Run Yamipod and connect your ipod.

It will "see" all the tracks.

Select all the tracks and choose "copy" and choose a destination folder.

Once completed, shut down Yamipod and open iTunes.

Go to "add folder to library" and import the folder that you copied from your ipod.

Sign in to your itunes account and then "authorise" your new computer

Connect your ipod and a dialogue box will appear with an option to transfer any tracks you have bought from the itunes store (if applicable)

Once that's sorted, you can let your new itunes synce with your ipod and all should be well.

You could download a programme to take the songs off of your ipod before you re-format it to work with the mac, assuming it is currently working in windows format.

My brother did this with his when he got a mac; I think he used a freeware programme called broken helix.

bugger, forgot that its a windows ipod configured.....

Guess i will need to wait until i have got parallels then?

A Mac will work happily with a Windows iPod but Windows won't work with a Mac iPod.... just to confuse matters!

Easiest way is to get an external USB2 hard drive, transfer your library from your old machine to your new machine - or use the iPod in disc mode, assuming you have enough free space on your iPod.

Which is pretty much what Apple say to do.

Senuti should work. Copy all the songs then reformat the ipod, it's exactly what i did and have had no prblems.

just to add to matters and make it harder, the old laptop is now at my parents and there is not much chance i will have contact with them for quite a while, so does that make it any harder to transfer the ipod tunes across?

I have backed up my music files onto my ipod as instructed by Apple in readiness to move to a new computer. Can I do the same with my photo files does anybody know and if so is it just a case of dropping and dragging the files into the ipod icon in my computer when the ipod is connected?

ust plonk the photos ina folder, and drag to the ipod icon... then, take them out at the other end...

Beat me to it. Really is a great little program

ETA IME it's best to have your iPod formatted for Windows anyhow, as then it will work with both Macs and PCs. For free transfer program on PC I use the embarrassingly named iDump
