Can someone recommend me a free software download that will enable me to drag and drop files from any pc onto my i-pod nano and avoid the f
king ste that is bd i-tunes!?
I know it's been discussed on here before but the PH search function seems to be at loggerheads with i-tunes for tonights biggest piss boiler.

All of my music was on another PC, which I no longer have access to; no big deal, all of my music is on the i-pod, I'll just sync it with the PC I do have access to and upload what's on there too....
You can't!!....well not within the 5 mins patience I have and I just want to drag and drop, microsoft / old school stylee!

dear, dear dear me... Another person who gets more angry at the application, than their own ability. I'd help yu, but alas you cannot be bothered to help yourself...
On second thought, You no longer have the library with your music on that was your main depository.... Erm, how did you go about that? Oh wait, tell me you have no backups either. Changing to another computer is a doddle, and has been discussed here. Someone will be along to tell you tyo get this software, or that software, but all you have to do is drag your music folder to an external drive, and move it to your new computer. Authorise the computer, and import the music. Job done. Instead you decide you can't be bothered doing any of that, despite iTunes asking if you want to back up whenever you either rip a cd, or make a purchase.

I think itunes is absolutely st, but then again i do prefer getting on with a life instead of sitting in front of a pc all day.
I've got 400gigs of music. I have a 30 gig ipod. I want to put 30 gigs of music on the ipod. My laptop, where i have itunes loaded, only has a 30 gig hard drive. Obviously if i put 30gig of music on the laptop i can't do anything else with it.
I have another pc that has a 500 gig hard drive, but its not the C drive.
Why do i want itunes? Why can't i simply drag and drop like i used to with the iRiver and Creative doo-dads i had in the past. Why do i even want itunes at all? I don't. Why do i have to give my credit card number to a company that i'm not going to but anything from? Why do I have to back up my music on the same drive as itunes (which in case i didn't mention, i don't want itunes at all, i just want music on a player). I don't want listings, and playlists and 'Genius' or whatever its called, and i don't want to buy another laptop.
When people say itunes is brilliant, they forget that for many people it has no purpose. Why do you want to list music that is already listed? Why list it again?
I regret that Apple has secured the portable player market so thoroughly. I haven't checked recently, but whenever i've looked to see if iriver or creative has produced a good alternative, they haven't. Its probably fair to say the ipod is the best player, but what do i want itunes cluttering up my laptop for?

Why do I want music that is already listed (by the file system I'm presuming)? For the same reason I use a GUI instead of a command line. It's a layer that most people want. i certainly don't want to just rely on my own memory of 400GB of music and just have it sitting there in a folder, I want something to make it easier to browse, search, make playlists etc.

Simple... tell iTunes that your library is the hard drive where your 400gb of music is. Then, you can create a simple playlist with the 30gb or so music you want on your iPod. Job done. It is no different than drag and drop.
As for wanting something to list it... not sure what your problem is. You pick what you want to play, and play it. You pick what you want on youtr ipod, and play it. because you do not quite understand what you want, doesn't mean it is not good. If you don't like it, get rid of the iPod and get something else.

I tried that, quite some time ago now. When it wouldn't work and i put my life on hold trying to find out why it wouldn't work, (which i didn't have to do with the previous players) i was told by the itunes geeks at the time that itunes really doesn't like it if the music is not on the C drive, and that has been my experience.Why do i have to create another playlist, no matter how simple? Why can't i simply copy the folders from the 400gig hd onto the ipod itself and have the music listed in the same way as it is on the hd? That was all i had to do with the previous players i used.

The problem is that that drive may be getting dissconnected all the time, but that's the price of having 400gb. Yes, the 400gig hd is not permanently connected, its a separate drive where i keep the music. Why do i need to copy the music onto the laptop, why can't i simply have the music on my 400hd and my ipod?
I'm not interested in computers enough to be able to understand this answer. Yes, i could devote time to learning enough to understand this answer, but at the end of the day I only want to listen to some music.
I think it's fair to say that this answer encapsulates everything that's wrong with itunes.
Transferring files is fairly easy if you're managing it yourself, I quite like some of the smart playlist ideas so I can exclude artists or tracks that are less than say 3 minutes
What I object to is the stupid way it indexes everything. If your music is stored on an external HDD for example, a few hundred gig takes about 3 days for Itunes to say it's OK or convert WMA to what it likes
And it wont take FLAC so you need to encode that into something else
