1 ov my m8s az a bird hu upd8s her facebook status like dis evry day an it dus my ed in. I no txt spk as bin discuzzd b4 on ere but seriously this is how a huge proportion of our 8 to 25 year-olds are communicating.

What is even worse is when I see organisations the size of HSBC using 'Text Speak' in their marketing campaigns to sell products.

If it is portrayed as normal, what chance have they got?

Oh, and as we're on the subject: there, they're, their, its, it's, your, you're etc etc...

My nineteen year-old cousin cannot grasp the basics of the syntax of Modern English and when I point incorrect grammar out to him he looks at me like I've just knobbed his sister.

There's a thought!

It's a sad state of society that we are breeding a nation of morons too stupid to even attempt to use the correct English.

Still, standards are improving...

Are they??

PS what is the correct response to someone who says, "Why does it matter?" and they are happy doing their plumbing job?

My phone puts a capital letter after I've typed a comma. Anyone under 30 will say "so what?" but it makes me furious. We're breeding a generation of morons.

That's not annoying, those ads on radio with young people communicating with young people is annoying.

Like those "don't stab people" or those "School not for you?" types.

I won't.
I deliberately type well punctuated and grammatically correct text messages just to prevent falling into those young bad habits!

I ripped a mate yesterday for something he'd written, his response was that it saves time and doesn't make any difference rolleyes

Being an old academic, I sent text messages in English sentences with punctuation. Recently I asked someone if they could meet meet me a a specific time and place - I got the reply "K"...

So I replied: "You have just sent me a message saying "K", what does it mean?"

Response: "OK"

I despair...

Read that back to yourself and see whether it really sounds correct.

I suppose when OK was first used there would have been many who said, what was wrong with "yes"?

hehe

When someone says, "My bad." I normally ask, "Your bad what?"

That said, someone did say it to me the other day. I almost asked, "Your bad what?" but decided she might not understand what I meant so I just let it go.
