Just wondered if there are any dieticians out there. I'm type2 diabetic and on metformin (two 500mg twice a day) and piagliclazone (15mg once a day) along with a 40mg simvastatin for borderline cholesterol.

My question is that my sugars are quite well controlled, but I'm putting on a fair bit of weight as the tablets are a bit on the heavy side and I have to eat a bit more than I would like, to keep my sugars up. Basically I have a Hobbiteque second breakfast to keep sugars up during the morning and my weight has crept up. What can I eat/drink to keep the sugars up to stop the hypos that will not increase my weight too much if I don't burn the excess? I eat oat cereal for breakfast and wholemeal bread as my 2nd breakfast and try to snack on fruit for rest of the day, but anyone got any good advice? Also, if in the new year I stick to my resolution, is there any pre-gym food to stave off hypos - I used to just eat a banana about 15 mins before I started running, any better ideas, any good websites

Cheers

Ted

Hi Ted, just tried to PM mail you, but you're blocked. The O/H is a Dietitian, so PM mail me, and I'll pass on your message to her.

2ps worth...............

Putting on weight is an indication that your medication is too "heavy" and not allowing sugars to be released into the blood stream. Your physician may advise a reduction in both food intake and medication.

Exercise helps but is difficult this time of year.

Sounds like your meds are working too well??

I'm not a doc (deal with a lot of diabetics though) sounds like you could maybe do with a medication review.

Hi Ted,

Sounds like you're on too much medication. Do you check your blood sugars at all? What are your fasting and pre-meal sugars like if you do? And your HbA1c?
Have you lost weight recently as that can impact significantly on your blood sugars?
Metformin alone doesn't cause hypoglycaemia. It may be the pioglitazone that is causing the trouble.

Who looks after your diabetes? Why not book in to see them and say exactly what you've just said.

Hope that helps.

I'm type 2 diabetic as well, my advice would be to see your medical practice dietician. I did and received 1st class advice.

I am not diabetic but take more metformin than that a day. I have found that it makes me feel awful for the first couple of weeks and I need to eat more which I was told can be quite common. In my case I was told to follow a low GI diet which worked for me. So back to your doctor etc for you. They will be able to review the picture as a whole

I'm Insulin Resistant/Type 2 on 3 x 500mg Metformin a day (Don't you just love the side effects of met!!!)

Met will make you loose weight so it's not that that is causing the problem. Not sure about the rest as I am solely on Met.

Another one on metformin (for a related condition) and yes it's supposed to make you lose weight.

For more info regarding hnealthy eating for diabetes, it's worth looking at the work of these two doctors:

I am Type 2.

Metformin tore my guts up so much that after a couple of years I wanted off of it and volunteered to take Insulin. Much better control all round.

I never had a problem with metformin, made me feel a bit groggy for the first couple of days, but was fine thereafter, no side affects. I was also put on gliclazide which was dreadful, had loads of hypos and tore my guts to pieces. Piagliclazone is much better, for me at least.

HBA1c is about 7%, morning bg is between 8 and 10mmol/l, although it will drop to 3.5 and lower if I dont have a 2nd breakfast.

I have diabetic clinic at Sheffields Northern General in Feb. My Doc is very, very good its just the dietician is never around!

I was diagnosed in Feb this year. I'm on 2 metaformin and 2 glucazide (close enuf) a day. I tend to pop a couple of gaviscon now as metaformin as I was warned doesn't win you any popularity contests.

I've put on 2stone this year since going on tablets but was told to expect some weight gains. Had a recent review and doctors happy , visiting diabetic nurse soon aswell for a review with her.

Might be getting laser eye fixes next week depending upon my eye specialist review - bricking it tbh.

Retinal problems? You'll be fine, although if they set the laser too high it will give you one hell of a headache. Had any decent bleeds in your eye yet?

Well not that I know of. Doctor said I had some fluid on the eye but they were keeping an eye (groan) on it. I know sometimes it acts up as it feels gritty. I've read it's not mean't to hurt but doesn't stop me worrying I guess - eye's and your bits never want anything bad to happen them always cause a wince or 2 wink

I foolishly thought earlier in the year (Jan) before I knew I was diabetic thought I had got an eye infection/something in it. Had a day off work as couldn't bear to open the eye to any form of light etc. Since found out that was obviously an issue caused by my diabetes.
