Help required: Biggest move of my life.

Evening all,
just wishing to lend on the experience of the PHers who've lived in/around London.
I'm moving there in five weeks time - for the initial period I need not worry about residence - but this will soon crop up for me to sort; and I'm already panicking.
With the wage I'll be picking up I won't be able to afford inner city property prices; so I've considered looking at outlaying areas such as Kent on the east side and then places such as Reading on the West.
These seem a little cheaper; but am I then going to find my commute to be a hectic and somewhat dangerous one into London - would possibly be commuting to the likes of Hackney/Hammersmith.
Also whilst I'm on the subject and seeing as this is a first for me; a single person living in a flat/terraced house what should they look to be paying per month in council tax, water, electric and gas bills?
Your assistance to me is greatly appreciated.

We don't all carry guns and knives you know!Think about renting in SM4 Morden. Right at the end of the Northern line. Or a bus ride to Morden and then tube. I live KT4 and it's perfectly safe around here.
Rent a room somewhere to start with. Take a look at http://www.moveflat.com (or others, but I like moveflat - you can filter out places with no parking, for instance). Make the most of living in the city without all the stress, cost and hassle of a long commute.
The cost will be much lower than renting your own place, you'll probably have more space, and while you shouldn't expect flatmates to become firm friends, it's good to have people around to potentially do things with until you build up a new circle of friends.

Not sure I follow. You've accepted a job in London but won't find out where your workplace will be until you start work? Someone help, please...

Considering Hackney/Hammersmith are a considerable commute apart, I don't see what anyone here can do to help. Equidistant to both would probably be living in/around the West End, which would most likely be far too much money.

Don't commute from Reading - that's just stupid. Live in the London suburbs instead (Uxbridge etc)

That said, I was looking at a house in Worcester Park and a few doors down, they had that white tent out in the garden and police officers top to toe in that white clothing they sometimes wear when doing murder investigations.
Re SW London, places like Putney, Mortlake, Kew, Richmond etc would all be good for Hammersmith. Teddington could also be an outside - and likely cheaper - option. A reasonable flat in any one of the aforementioned locations will likely cost upward of £1k a month rent not including services, and council tax in Richmond is one of the highest in the country. Other alternatives - although not necessarily so directly handy for W London - could include some areas around Wimbledon Park/Raynes Park/Southfields/Morden, which will be cheaper for c tax. Best of luck - some smashing places in any of those locations mentioned, just takes some looking around.

I've generally found rents in places further in aren't much more expensive, especially if you factor in lower commuting costs. Further out is handier though if you need to drive out of London or just want more space and things like off-street parking.
