Hotels near Salzberg

I'm taking Mrs Racer away for her Birthday and would like some recommendations of hotels in the Salzberg region.
Something nice but not too expensive would be great as i'm planning on driving (afraid of flying).
I'd like to go and see the Eagle's Nest (what's left of it) and so any advice etc would be gratefully received.

Star Inn in the centre of Salzburg. Its an Accor type hotel (if not an Accor), eg the rooms are basic, clean, functional and aren't a dreadful place to be in. Reasonable price as well.

If you can stretch to the Friesacher, then it's well worth it.

This is a fantastic place to stay, they have excellent food, lovely surroundings and traditional decor. Its about 10 minutes into the centre, and head the other way it's ten minutes to the lakes.

If the Eagle's Nest interests you check out http://www.thirdreichruins.com/ for information on the Berchtesgarten and the Obersalzburg area under the Nazis. You'll be able to locate key features and buildings (though much of the area is being redeveloped with the loss of the historical sites).
Edit: although if this is a birthday trip for the missus dragging her around such places may not be quite what she had in mind...

The Eagles Nest is fantastic, its all there and in great condition, but beware it is closed during certain times of the year.
Pretty certain the Eagles Nest is now closed - as I suspect is the Grossglockner Pass.Still plenty to do :
- Salt Mines at Hallein are well worth a visit (http://www.salzwelten.at)
- Salzburg Christmas Market should now be in place
- Salzburg Fortress
- And of course as it is now winter there a plenty of ski resorts within easy reach!!
But if you can wait to summer there is even more to do:
- Jetboat at Wagrain (With the Where Eagles Dare Castle as a back drop!)
- Ice Caves just out side Wagrain
- Summer Toboggan at Hallein
- The water 'tour' at Hellbrun Palace
- White water rafting at Taxenback just outside Zell am See
... the list goes on and on - it's just a great part of the world
... which is probably why I am flying out on Friday for a weekends skiing

There is also the classic GrossGlockner Pass up to the glacia just round the corner from Zell. Fantastic driving road.

The drive there from Salzburg is lovely too - well WELL worth a visit, especially for hot chocolate and strudel at the top of the mountain which I've forgotton the name of with a good view of Zell and Kaprun.
We were in Salzburg last Summer and stayed at the Gersberg Alm - it's a couple of miles out of the city, set up a large hill/small mountain on the edge of a forest and provides the most wonderful view out over the City.
The Gersberg was the setting for an 8km hillclimb course which is still used once a year (late May) for a gathering of historic hillclimb cars. We watched an original Veritas being tested - most impressive - the sound echoing through the trees was reminiscent of Wiscombe)
The hotel has a super restaurant and the rooms are well appointed.
We drove to Salzberg from Switzerland - I'd been working near Luzern and SWMBO flew into Zurich - we spent three days following the Deutsche Alpine Strasse from Lake Constance (Bodensee)to Salzberg - it's about 300 miles of the most incredible driving roads and wonderful scenery - thoroughly recommended - though I'm not sure that the road is kept open all year round.
We found a couple of super hotels en route - Hotel Sonne in Bad Hindelang and in Hotel Wilhelmy in Bad Wiesee - courtesy of www.romantikhotels.com

The names Berchtesgaden, The Obersalzberg and the Eagles Nest are often confused and mixed up as one place.
Bertesgarten is the bottom of the mountain - this will be open
Obersalzburg is mid way up the mountain - this will be open
(but much of the remaining stuff is tucked away)
The eagles Nest is at the top of the mountain - this will be closed
(this tends to open between may ish and October ish - this is due to snow and rock falls in the winter)

I too would wholeheartedly recommend Romantik Hotels. We've had some great stays at hotels we'd never normally stumble across - including their excellent Hotel Beaucour in Strasbourg!
However, my number one place to stay for Salzburg, even if only for a night or two would have to be the Intercontinental at Berchtesgaden. We stayed there for a couple of nights last May (actually on a freebie with Priority Club points) and it was one of the best hotels I've stayed in (in terms of service, food, decor etc.)
It's about a 25-30 minute drive out of Salzburg but was well worth it for the views and for the history of the site - as mentioned in earlier posts.

I agree with all of Stuart's post. I like the Romantik hotels (an early night away with my now wife was at teh fantastically named Romantik Hotel Messerschmidt in Bamberg).However, my number one place to stay for Salzburg, even if only for a night or two would have to be the Intercontinental at Berchtesgaden.
