Anyone else think this is ridiculous? I'm not a smoker so doesn't effect me really, but I just think that banning them from displays will make kids want them even more. Not only that, but what are smokers meant to do before choosing?

I think they're going for the 'out of sight, out of mind' approach - might work, who knows /shrug

I think they're not bothering with vending machines, they just want to work on stopping under 18's from using them.

Really gets on my nerves this one. I personally don't really care if they are under the counter, on the top shelf, next to the apples. What does get me wound up though is that it is just another chip away at the right to chose for your self.

Yet another law which is going to be all but un workable without 986 pages of detail in Statutory Instruments to define what is and isn't acceptable.

We are way past the thin end of the wedge.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought fags were a nice little earner for the Government (they receive far more in duty than it costs in NHS bills)?

So, why are they so keen to put people off smoking, help people quit and generally make smoking less attractive?

I cannot condone smoking, no-one with any real education can - but I fail to see the point of your post, aside from a thinly veiled vitriolic rant. Let's hope someone doesn't write the same when alcohol is seen as the next 'anti' campaign, and the same stigma applied to it.

They're not keen to put people off smoking. They are keen to be seen to want to put people off smoking.

They want to be seen to be doing something to help all the nutters out there.

I dont smoke but just another example of how the goverment are slapping bans on this that and the other, when they should be concentrating on getting us out of this mess. Sticking them under the counter isnt going to help.

You do realise I was in support of people being able to choose to buy them if they want? And that they shouldn't have to be hidden away.

My point was previous to the smoking ban I was all for banning them from sale so I didn't have to inhale other peoples smoke. Now I'm not forced to do that, I dont care if people buy them as it no longer affects me. The tax pays for their NHS bill (or if it does not it should be increased until it does). Everybodys a winner.

So what exactly was your problem?

They want to be seen to be doing something to help all the nutters out there.

But nutters generally believe everything they see on TV. What happens if these (no doubt expensive) adverts actually encourage some of them to quit?

And surely selling fags "under the counter" would actually make them more cool, as it gives off an additional air of being something a bit dodgy - which of course, all teenagers aspire to.

So what exactly was your problem?

I guess my problem is that we all seem all too eager to support any type of ban because of our own petty prejudices, and with each new ban, it’s greeted with applause.

The point I was trying to make is that, whilst you now feel better that it’s banned, there will be another guy who will equally be as happy as you are with the smoking ban, when something you like is banned – be it alcohol, nice cars etc.

Priorities are all wrong; I’d wager a smoker would be more heavily punished for smoking in the wrong place than a 14 year old inflicting pain on a pensioner. If the country was ‘in order’, and crime and unemployment were minimal, I could understand the government focusing on more petty stuff.
