why is it that the nhs are so useless? The girlfriend is booked in today to have the cysts removed off her ovaries, she was told to call at 8:30am today to check if they have any beds free before she is meant to be admitted at 11am, for the surgery at 1:30pm. Guess what? No beds free please call back at 10:30am??!! Seriously, she has been booked in for over 3 months now and yet, there isn't any beds free, its not hard to reserve a bed for someone!!
I'll be quite ppissedd if they have to cancel this operation. The girlfriend has had to do loads of planning with work to get the time off as December is a holiday blackout as she works in retail.
I think I might just go to Frimley hospital, ask for a bed, if they say no, I will slash the OH so she can be admitted as an emergency case instead!

I'm off today to a funeral of a friend who wasn't very well, nothing major, he was getting on a bit but generally OK.
He went into hospital, got a bug (suspected via the hospital according to the coroner) which gave him blood poisoning and he died.
My three year old said over the weekend 'I thought hospitals were where people got better daddy......?'

They do a fantastic job under very difficult conditions and i have nothing but praise on my experiences.
Me too, it may be something to do with what area you are in but my family have always had good treatment.They do a fantastic job under very difficult conditions and i have nothing but praise on my experiences.

Sadly all the NHS consultants I have seen have been flippant or lacking in basic knowledge on some procedures. (He was probably feigning it, as his option was the easiest to perform but not good cosmetically)They do a fantastic job under very difficult conditions and i have nothing but praise on my experiences.
I also couldn't be bothered waiting the 6 months for the proceedure, so I booked it privately and got sorted 7 days later.
I'm still waiting to get my nose fixed (Can't breathe through it well). That was 6 years ago. Unless you keep chasing them, they strike you off the waiting list with no warning. How professional.

I'm a great believer in the NHS - they do a wonderful job in very difficult circumstances.
At this time of year beds are at a premium and non urgent routine cases will have to be put off. Theatre lists and bed spacing are a logistical nightmare along with staff sickness and emergency cases. The amount of work behind the scenes is phenominal and I can assure you that the staff are doing their best to make the system work.
It is just as frustrating for the staff as it is for the patients. The public would be the first to complain if something went wrong because of over subscribing beds and accidents due to staff shortages - heads you lose, tails you lose.

You do realise it's not a hotel so priority for beds goes to those who are sickest. And as it's winter there's a lot of those about.Unless we protest at the often shoddy service provided by the NHS it will not improve. Are there any people left delusional enough to think the NHS is the 'envy of the world'

Playing devil's advocate for a moment - they hardly know in advance how many people are going to be sick in 3 months do they? The fact is, all the beds are constantly full, so it becomes a case of priorities.Neil_H said:

The fact is, all the beds are constantly full, so it becomes a case of priorities.I had a collar bone in 3 pieces, the surgeon did an amazing job, 6 weeks later I was working as normal, despite a slight twinge if I really overdo it, it's great.
When I had my first surgery appointment it was cancelled after they had prepped me as there was an emergency case coming in, it doesn't matter if you are booked 10 years in advance, if someones health will be directly affected by waiting a few hours for an operation then they have to go in first.

In an ideal world, yes it should. In the Real WorldTM staff go sick, there are various epidemics, wards get closed because of D&V bugs etc etc so non-urgent cases get deferred.The NHS is expensive enough without providing excess capacity to cope with all eventualities.
